Peryton
Unexpected Wilds Creature
The Peryton is a carnivorous creature from the Fae Wilds that is a surprising combination of two common forest animals. They are a quadruped, with the head, chest, front legs, and tail of an Owl, and the rear, back legs, and horns of a Deer. What's more, they have a curious symbiotic relationship with the Skvader, a race of winged rabbits, something that should be a food source but is not treated as such.
The Skvader help to remove bugs and parasites from the Peryton's body while they rest in the evening, consuming what they take off of the Peryton as they do. As such, you will tend to find a Skvader den close to where a Peryton has their nest.
A Fae's Best Friend
Through much trial and error, the Fae have learned the secrets to taming a Peryton to act as their mount. They are by no means domesticated, however; just tamed enough to accept a singular rider. The Fae know better than to try and domesticate a proud creature such as the Peryton. Those that have attempted fail in bloody, gory ways.
Despite this, once tamed, the Peryton is incredibly loyal to their rider, coming to their defense should they even perceive a threat to the rider's person. It is considered an incredible achievement to be able to calm another's Peryton from such a frenzy. Not many have attempted, and those that have often bear the scars for the remainder of their lives.
Dietary Needs
Taking from their Owl roots, the Peryton is primarily carnivorous, though they are capable of processing fibrous materials. They primarily hunt smaller prey animals, and do consume them whole, compressing everything they cannot process into pellets.
