First Light

First Light was a frontier Terran world first colonized in 2595 by Ashen Church settlers.

Climate

First Light, formerly known as Buckman's World, located in the BD-94-11-A star system, now known as Helios A. First Light is the third planet in the system and it is a rocky, somewhat warm planet with regular rainfall. It has one major ocean and several other rivers.

There is no advanced native life on First Light, with nothing more complex than lichen and microbes living on the planet. The settlers have brought the usual stock of domestic animals and plants with them.

Colonization

The initial effort in 2595 largely appealed to worshippers of the Ashen Church and social conservative values. Around 2 million colonists settled the planet between 2595 and 2600. They mostly came from Earth.

HPC provided much of the initial infrastructure and set up the colony in a similar, if scaled down, way to Rygar.

To deal with concerns stemming from the proximity to the Yakuza ran world of Fort Carpenter, 8,000 Tyran Marines were deployed to First Light to offer security against the Yakuza. A Tyran Navy contingent was also deployed to help with piracy and dealing with the Yakuza

Political Membership

First Light was accepted as a full member of the Republic in 2600.

Piracy and the Yakuza

First Light is based less than 9LY from the Yakuza controlled world of Fort Carpenter. Its shipping lanes were often subject to piracy.

Constitution

First Light initially operated under its newly established code of laws, which banned colonists from adding cybernetic augmentation of any kind, though those with existing cybernetic limbs are permitted to keep them. The colony also had a strict ban on genetic tampering, meaning that persons born on First Light will not have access to modern gene altering and DNA amendment techniques, except where a life could be lost as a result.

The colony also enforced the ban on full human cloning. These laws made the world appealing to Ashen Church worshippers.

Government Structure

The Baron

Upon the resignation of Tiberius Corvo from the position of Father-General, all subsequent Governors adopted the title ‘Baron of First Light’, and served as sovereign of the world. Any opposition to the establishment of a hereditary title within the Republic, or just the way in which First Light was governed came from outside the planet. All who came to make a new life, or just to conduct business on First Light were aware of the political system.

Ashen Council

In the initial stages of First Lights colonisation and development, Father-General Corvo’s authority was absolute. However towards the latter stages of his governance he formulated the Ashen Council to provide checks and balances to both his and his successors governance, as well as take on the growing administrative duties of First Light.

Comprised of 56 Ashen Church elders from across the various regions of the planet, the Ashen Council served as a chamber for debating, amending and passing legislation as proposed by the Baron. New legislation would be weighed according to the three key principles of the Ashen Church as set out by Father-General Corvo: Diligence (Hard work), Temperance (moderation), and Vigilance (an active struggle against the forces of darkness).

Ordinators

Once the initial settlement of First Light became large enough to warrant a police force, the Ordinators were established. Initially charged with keeping the peace, the Ordinators often found themselves dissuading any visitors from unruly or unscrupulous behaviour more often than attending disputes between First Light’s majority conservative and god-fearing native population.

Confessors

As the world of First Light grew, so did the threats towards the safety of the Governor and his administration. In answer to this, Father-General Corvo ordered the formation of the Confessors, a small number of government operatives with wide ranging powers, able to act as bodyguards or secret police as the situation demanded.
