Hradlar

Herald of Beasts and Queller of Needs

The youngest of the Elven gods until the apotheosis of Simareth, he is paradoxically the patron of Wild Elves, the oldest Tribe of Elves. As with all the gods, his domain consists of three aspects: a part of the sky (the constellation of the Great Stag), an element of nature (beasts, i.e. animals), and a social principle (Needs).
  • As the Herald of Beasts, he protects non-sapient creatures and their cycle of life. In this he is revered by Wood Elves who recognize the role of birds and beasts in propagating plant life and spreading seeds, but in particular by Wild and Night Elves, who are the only Tribes that habitually hunt and eat meat. Hunters invoke his will before engaging on a hunt, and make an offering of a small part of their yield to him as recompense for his blessing.
  • As the Queller of Needs, he sees to the physical well-being of all living things, including people. Those facing famine or disease beseech his aid, and pray for strength to endure hardships and shortages.

Tenets of Faith

There is no practice of livestock-keeping in Elven culture, and indeed such is seen as a cruel and unnecessary imprisonment. Instead, Elves view all beasts in the region as their stock, and the Wild and Night Elves in particular regularly hunt of them for food and to procure other materials such as leather and bone. By contrast, other Tribes of Elves will only kill a beast out of self-defense, and will not eat or otherwise use its body parts. Adherents of Hradlar survey and protect game animals, as well as birds and insects whose life cycles intertwine with those of the plants and are involved in their reproduction. The stereotype of the Elven ranger or warden is based on these priests. They work individually or in small groups, patrolling the lands around settlements, with bows as their primary weapons, looking for signs of natural disaster, disease among the wildlife, poachers, or any other disturbance of nature.   Prayers to Hradlar, when made by Wild or Night Elves, consist of pieces of animal bone, antler, or leather, which may be inscribed with the name of the intended recipient of a blessing. These can be placed on shrines which are common in smaller communities.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

His official statue in the antechamber to the Hall of the Chosen stands to the left of the entry corridor, across from that of Ruandal and next to that of Cadlassa. It faces the center of the chamber while carrying a lamb made of platinum, and has a bow of yew slung to its back. The statue is made of birch wood, clad in silver wire representing wool, with eyes of amber and bronze hair.

Apparel & Accessories

A woolen robe and crown of antlers, carries a bow of yew.   Adherents wear practical robes of wool or cloth, accented with tin. Amounts of metal are kept small for reasons of stealth, so badges are used to indicate rank.

Mental characteristics

Morality & Philosophy

Hradlar is alternately jovial and serious, depending on the circumstances. He frequently engages in sports and games, either for a tangible reward, for fame, or for the simple excitement of the activity. Yet when circumstances are dire, he is single-minded in purpose and ruthless in his actions, and will not hesitate to use violence to protect his charges.
