Gnoll

Basic Information

Anatomy

Standing on digitigrade legs, this hyena-like creatures walk on two legs with a hunched back in all but the rarest cases. Aside from their heads, legs, and tail, their physical body resembles a Human in almost mirrored ways, deviating primarily at the spine where it curves forward - even Gnolls that walk with a "straight back" can't fight against this natural development of their skeletal structure, so even they have a visible, albeit not heavy, curve to their back. The only exception being Gnolls that have been bred through generations of Gnolls living in civilization - these Gnolls can, but won't always, have a skeletal structure nearly the same as a Human's.

Growth Rate & Stages

Gnolls age much faster than Humans, reaching adulthood at around age 13, but living up to around the same age as Humans.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Gnolls are ravenous meat-eaters, most often consuming the meat while it's still raw. Gnolls don't need the meat to be cooked, but they still understand taste differences and so will cook meat when they have an abundant stock of it.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Gnolls generally live in tribes, typically called packs. These packs consist of an alpha, a shaman, and a matriarch. The alpha is head of everything, the shaman is in charge of the unknown and healing the wounded, and the matriarch is in charge of keeping the hunters (the rest of the pack) in check.

Average Intelligence

Gnolls are not known to be the brightest of beings - even those that made it into civilized life are generally very gullible and have hard times understanding advanced equipment, or even average equipment sometimes.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Gnolls have sensitive hearing, but they can also see in the dark, making them natural predators and deadly hunters.

Civilization and Culture

Relationship Ideals

Gnolls have no understanding of relationships, they don't court each other and don't dedicate themselves to anyone but their alpha - they are simiple-minded beings that live simple lives, they don't have many customs or traditions, if any.

Average Technological Level

Gnolls have practically no technological advancements - they live in makeshift tents and hunt with bows and spears still tipped with sharp stone. They understand concepts like metel is sharper than stone, so they will often scavange peices of better equipment from the victims of their raids and hunts and try to combine it to their own. For example, a Gnoll may cut the head of a spear off of a guard he killed, then try to attach that spear head to a shaft he carved himself, instead of just using the guard's spear as it was.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Gnollish, the language spoken by Gnolls, is a very simple language, that has a heavy limit on it's practical uses. Due to it primarily being made up of sounds Gnolls make, it's a very difficult language for people to speak, or even learn to understand.

Common Dress Code

Gnolls don't wear too much; a loincloth is the extent of their common apparel, though often paired with armor - usually consisting of pauldrons, shinguards, bracers, thigh-guards, or, very rarely, some kind of chest armor.
