Dracovir

Dracovir are a race of people descended from dragons. They are often called "Dragon-Kin" in common conversation, or "Dragon-folk" when used more frivolously. Within their own culture and language, The Dracovir call themselves, "Dra’zhen" - using the suffix "Dra" meaning "Dragon" and the word "Zhen" meaning "Blood" - a literal translation meaning Dragon-blooded, or the common translation meaning True-Kin.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Dragon-Kin walk on two digitigrade legs with talon-tipped toes on their draconic feet; their heads are highly resemblant their Dragon ancestors if not the same; the musculature of their body is nearly the same as the average Human's; they have long Dragon-like tails and large wings to support flight.

Genetics and Reproduction

After traditional reproduction and a gestation period of 12 months, Dragon-Kin mothers typicaly lay two to three eggs at once - four eggs being laid is uncommon, one or five eggs being laid is rare, any more then five is nearly unheard of. These eggs will initially be fairly small to what one might expect to see, but will continue to grow a little to help accomidate the hatchling's growing size.

Growth Rate & Stages

When Dragon-Kin are born, they have no claws or wings, and their tail is much too short for the expected ratio of their body. As they grow larger, their tail's length starts to extend properly, reaching it's correct ratio roughly one year after they are born, then their claws and horns/spines begin to grow - a sign to the parents that the tail's length is finished. The hatchling's claws will reach full development after an adittional year, having gone from nothing at all to razor-sharp talons. Shortly before the claws finish developing, the parents can expect to see growths on the child's back where the wings begin to form. Taking the longest to develop, a hatchling's wings can take up to two full years to grow and develop enough muscle for use. Once the wings have done growing, by an estimated age of four years old, the Dragon-Kin is no-longer considered a hatchling, but nnow just a child. The child's senses will continue to sharpen over time, allowing him to see in the dark or detect the "scent" of magic; these senses can take several years to develop, more so the magical sense than the sight, which usually develops with a couple of years. Once the senses are developed, the elemental affinity within the child begins to take place - allowing him/her to breathe the element, and even shaping their scales if neccessary matching is required. By the end of this last physical development, the Dragon-Kin is considered pre-adolescent; typically around the age of fifteen to nineteen, depending on the elemental formed. Once their mind fully ages to the point of maturity, the Dragon-Kin is a full grown-adult; typically this is around the age of twenty five.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Dragon-Kin are fierce meat-eaters; beyond their strong taste for it, their bodies uniquely require it. Dragon-Kin make it a holiday to conduct a mass hunt for food supply, generally done on other continents - the more exotic the meat, the better. Following the conclusion of this week-long holiday, however, they have a month-long holiday to focus on conservation and reproduction of the animals/creatures they hunted, having great respect for nature and not wanting to throw the balance off, nor be the cause of anything's extinction. All the food they gathered from their hunt is stored in a large, specially-crafted building kept freezing cold by mages or cold-aligned Dragon-Kin.
