The Philosopher
The Philosopher is The External responsible for encouraging thought and knowledge throughout the world.
The Philosopher exists to ensure that mortals prosper in regards to their knowledge, and advance well beyond that which they began with. The Philosopher is a much a teacher as they are a thinker, encouraging mortals to go beyond the bounds of what they know, and strive to be better in the realm of knowledge.
Many great scholars, paragons in their fields, have either claimed or been suspected of being The Philosopher taking an active role in the advancement of mortals. None of these claims could hold up under scrutiny, due to the mysterious nature of The Externals, the proof needed is too unknown. Many however have claimed that The Philosopher has helped them with their work, citing a mysterious figure, a guest or temporary member of their library or research institution, that provided the key knowledge needed to unlock the next step of their research.
These claims have been used to assign a description for The Philosopher, a description scholars can use to know when their patron is within their circles. However, these descriptions vary so much over several years and decades that many assume the Philosopher does not have a common form, or at least swaps it out every so often as to not arouse suspicion.
It is hard to say how much mortal progress can be ascribed to The Philosopher, if he was behind every important advancement since The First Revolution, or if he just provided a guiding hand here and there, pointing scholars and scientists towards each other, or towards ancient unknown tomes that would unlock their work. Regardless many thank The Philosopher regardless of his actual contribution, seeing him as the collective spirit of academia and science, rather than perhaps a single man.
