Quycur
On occasions called simple "Q" for short, and Quyim/Quyess in masculine/feminine denotions. They're a rhino-like species, native to Nuzar. They've had a long history. Unlike most species, they have shown low signs of domestic conflict, however have a history of perverse meddling and manipulating other species with less mercy. Their culture ended up largely congregating around a goddess figure named Nuzyla'Umisa. She's been depicted as a mighty round-bellied quyess of a deep violet color. Its said her belly is huge from eating and recycling materials, turning them into miracles and the birth of the quycur race. This has invoked ideas they call The Zylumi Art in which one imprints their creative spirits onto soil and person alike. To follow this doesn't include other quycur as "goddess already made us as she wanted", but rather the philosophy invokes applying this over other species and eco systems, using life and former life as a canvas.
Quycur are creative and loud creatures, often enjoying art, building, painting, and applying these into other people's spaces. This can be as harmless a requesting to model and decorate fur, to weird stuff like egg yolks over a house, down to the morbid of sapient taxidermy or attempting to cast someone in liquid metal. Despite being herbivores, they have an unusual rate of poaching and testing what they can make out of others. While many may still be viable & safe neighbors, Zylumi philosophy has been a bedrock of their culture long enough that its hard to bet on their intentions.
The Eras...
They have been through three different recorded ages, with everything prior noted as The Scattered Primals. The rest are...- Age Of Plenty: Generally a peaceful bronze-age type time, and strong rainy era. Records and art pointed to huge harvests and food cultures, fruits that aren't even found in present, and very corpulent male patriarchs. This was the age of strongly enforcing and teaching the ways of the godess, but also of patriarchy and 'her devoted males' meant to lead with wisdom and miracles believed to now be from dark mana.
- Age Of Pebbles: Miracles seemed to wither, but so to did the harvest. Dry seasons hit harder, and quycur had to get smarter about forging shelters. The species got better with records, buildings, and family media, but strived harder and got more skeptical and nihilistic in some groups. Zylumi largely entertained them and lifted their spirits. The species was skinnier, and Nuzar became largely more of a savannah type terrain, lasting for so long that parts of the doubt was in how real the era of plenty was.
- Fall Of Stars: Also 'The Great Exchange'. It was marked by lionkin invading, and settling. At first mutual, the quycur imposed their normal will when scouting out a few, and later incited a war of protest when lions found peers pelted and paralyzed around pottery. Its not certain how long this occured, but quycur began losing to the tech and tenacity of the lions until the ZHIS intervened. The zekani showed up with feelings of rivalry against their Felyran cousins, and fought to claim merit with the natives. However they didn't just stop at favors, and prompted their own settling as they turned Nuzar into their imperial capital. Quycur split between leaving on uplifted space-age tech, and becoming republicans, to those who stayed to serve in ZHIS.
- Era of Quyess Growth: Debated on as a proper record or era, but the one some argue to be living now. From losses in the lionkin battles, to the split and breakup from their homeland, quycur began ramping-up breeding by huge amounts, and are seen multiplying and spreading through a lot of locations. The name not only denotes heavier pregnancies, but also that females are getting bolder in powers, ambitions, strong imperial promotions, and even fattening-up - which could be unique from even the Plenty era, as male kings were the ones eating most back then.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Described as rhino-like bipeds. Tall stature, a bit burly by design, and strong reinforced bone mass. They grow potentially large horns on the ridge of their snout, have mid-sized ears, thick hide, and a mid-small tufted tail. Their feet are a little wide, and jut out short toes with big hoof-like nail casings. They are not very graceful balancers, but are also hard to knock down from a stable surface. Hide colors can range from stone-blue, gray, red-brown, clay, almonde, brown, and even soft violet tinges or white. Manes can flourish, and grow down as far as an inch past shoulder blades. Males tend to have a longer strip of mane with less density, while most females can optionally grow it out like hair but have less of the same root length with some genetics incapable of having any roots grow below the neck. Males more typically come out taller, and with thicker horns.
Genetics and Reproduction
Males have a cyclical time and urge to go into heat. While they're capable of being sexually active all-around, they tend to drop interest unless 'the season' hits, in which they call it The Rising Time. In this state, they are as prone to behavior as tikerin with mating shock, and it can either last for weeks, or end after many successive efforts of 'relief'. This only occurs for around a decade of their life, and may skip a couple years.
Females are superfetacious, and can foster multiple father's infants around the same time. Unlike males, they don't have a season, but typically the more estrogen they have, the more they're likely to be very forward or dirty-minded. This is believed to corrolate with their creativity, and their skills in homestead ingenuity, meaning they're also better to have many offspring with. In some instances, a female may even 'pester' a male who's tired and disinterested well outside of their Rising season, though many are complacent to wait. More stoic females may be more choosey, or respond to even mating season like its an obstacle to their time and needs. Once a child starts developing, it takes around 4-5 months to birth, yet they can brood up on around 9 children at a time if they've been 'popular'.
Dietary Needs and Habits
An herbivore species by nature, but with some picky tendancies. They actually despise cud, and see it as a dirty or taboo food to graze off the ground. However twigs and bark have been a very old and 'classic' form, and used to be treated akin to a bread sort of material. They adore berries, insects, nuts, and even types of leaves. They quickly got smart enough to learn baking and more cooked dishes, and created forms of vegitable spreads from mashed starches, bread toasting, distilling and fermenting drinks, and a great love of teas. In modern times they've adopted a heavy diet of dairy, sweets, and still love teas and nuts. Like zekani, they've dabbled in meat especially in byproducts like tiker-taffy, bone broth, though typically dislike hard and true meats. In feats of extreme guilty pleasures, they are even caught adoring lardshakes. Like taur, they have a difficulty in stopping if there is a huge food supply.
Additional Information
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Their eyes have extra side-depth, but not the best direct line-of-sight focus. There is a tiny gap around the horn they can't focus on, and even if they could, the horn would obscure vision. As such they tend to have made special optical goggles for better direct sight, but they have naturally better peripheral view to the point its (falsely) claimed they can see behind them. In fact their keen vision is around 155 degrees, with some blurred sight up to 170.
Their body-fat is a strange natural creator charge for dark mana, meaning a doughy one can start to engage in soft sensory aid that can help their above blind spot by 'sensing' weights around them. Increased fattening and some focus can train them on more elaborate and potent spells. They are still able to use mana if there are tools to produce it, and if they aren't dual-casting with dark. In cases like contact with orichalcum, their fatty deposites are actually being slowly drained until its worn down the mineral.
Lifespan
90-120 Years
Average Height
1.7-2.1m
Average Physique
Tend to be all over the spectrum. Sturdy bodies & bones, and a tendancy to be heavy eaters if food is abundant. Males are more naturally soft-bellied and stronger bulk, while females can be very slim and supple. They've only gotten fatter post-ZHIS influence
