Numari Magic

Magical energy - known as chara (ka-ra) - is contained and replenished within all living beings. The word "chara" can also be translated as "soul" in Old Numarian.   Each numari is born with an affinity for a type of magic, which is bestowed upon them at birth by one of the Numares - the pantheon of gods. Despite regional superstitions, the affinity one receives is determined entirely by the design of the gods.   Due to the way magic and religion are intrinsically related in Numaria, a strong magical prowess is generally considered to be correlated with strong moral character or substance. The Numares select the best of the numari to be their strongest champions, meaning that those who are weak in their magical abilities - or do not display magical ability at all - are believed to be disfavoured by the gods.

Magic Types

Numares Magic
Solis Those kissed by the Sun God’s rays are called Firekeepers, who have been gifted with the ability to create and manipulate heat and flame in all its forms.
Oara The Queen of Harvest shares her boon with the Botanists, who bear Oara’s gift of bringing life to the world. Oara’s chosen can grow a variety of plantlife in a multitude of conditions, depending on skill and power.
Marus The Commander of the Seas imbues his Waterkeepers with the ability to create and manipulate water in all its destructive and healing power.
Ceria The Mistress of the Sky gifts her Windkeepers with the power to create and manipulate air and wind. A few of her chosen may develop the ability to affect the weather.
Daeros The Vengeful God lends his raw power to his chosen, allowing Kinetics to physically move and manipulate all manners of objects and materials at varying levels of force and speed.
Zora The Eternal Huntress blesses her Beastmasters with the ability to commune with and command animals. Some of her most devout followers have gained the ability to shapeshift.
Kaiora Those blessed with the magic of the Lady of Chaos are called Enchanters. The Enchantment affinity allows users to enchant objects to move or behave a specific way for a temporary period of time. Higher skill levels allow users to enchant more complex behaviour for extended or even indefinite periods of time.
Oneir The Lord of Order reserves the rarest gift for his chosen. Prophets are blessed (or cursed) with the ability to see fate itself unfold, weaving its way through time and space. Historically, there have only been three recorded Numari born in Oneir’s favour.
Numari typically choose their profession based on their magical gifts - for example, those chosen by Oara are often considered the best candidates to pursue a career in alchemy.   It is possible, through decades of study and prayer, to gain the favour of another Numares in order to obtain the gifts of their magic. This is an incredibly rare and difficult feat and has only been achieved a handful of times throughout history. There is a quicker path to achieving this goal, which comes at a great price through the practice of Malor.

Infirmi

For almost all numari, magical affinity becomes evident within the first three years of life. In some cases, a numari may not show any magical ability until many years later - some as late as the age of 20 or 30. In other cases, a numari may be very weak in the magical affinity they possess and may have difficulty performing basic magic. Some unfortunate numari experience both.   These cases are referred to as Infirmi - derived from “weak” in Old Numarian. Infirmi generally suffer a stigma in society for their lack of magical prowess. Some manage to overcome their weakness through hard work or simple patience, while a rare unfortunate few never overcome it at all.

Mages

Since (theoretically) all numari are magically inclined, the term "mage" in Numaria refers to those who dedicate themselves to a life of magical study. Due to the nature of numari magic being intrinsically linked to the Numares, mages are theologians and scholars in equal parts.
