Boundary Beacon

"Its construction is wholly different from any style employed by either humans or ogrids and its functionalities way beyond their capabilities. Attempts to understand its workings have all proved futile. We require proper scientific instruments for such a task."
-Boundary Walker Hakuan Brestelveri Sar, the Scientist

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Boundary Beacons are obelisks two meters tall and half a meter wide. They are plain on the outside, made from a material resembling dark gray stone. Two narrow slits that cut through their width reveal a complex interior made of a more silvery material. While the arrangements of tubes, wheels and axes suggest a moving mechanism, no such movement has been of yet detected and none of the parts will budge when attempting to move them with a narrow stick introduced in the opening. No indication of symbols has been observed on them or within them. They couldn't be moved using the limited forces employable by the primitive technology of this world.   Once immersed in the Boundary Portal, the Boundary Walker's conscience will be made manifest within the associated Beacon. From there, the world can be perceived using only mana perception. If a human is within two kilometers range of the beacon, the Boundary Walker can concentrate their perception upon them and, through unknown processes, their conscience will be transferred in the target human.   As humans are vulnerable to death from many incurable disease and from old age, a Boundary Walker will need to eventually escape from its host in order to survive. Transferal from the human host can be done only within the 2 km range of a Beacon by focusing mana perception on it. Their consciousness will be placed within it indefinitely and can be transferred to another human when it becomes available. Multiple Mopi'oi can thus reside within a single Beacon at the same time, with the record documented number being 14. Return to the Inner Plane can only be done at the Boundary Beacon from which the Walker had initially emerged in the Outer Plane.

Significance

Every Boundary Portal in the Inner Plane connects to a Boundary Beacon in the Outer Plane. These are mostly spread on the land around the Adronian Sea of OPO1. Others are in water, and very few spin around OPO1 at great heights.   Because Boundary Walkers risk annihilation with the demise of their host, they tend to stay within a few days walking distance from a Beacon, to escape to it in time if disease or old age endanger the host's life. Moreover, as these tend to be far away from human settlements, Mopi'oi tend to regularly visit nearby beacons, to check if a fellow Walker has remained isolated within it and to bring a suitable human host if that is the case.   Their conformation and placement suggest design, however no clues have been uncovered regarding their origin. The hypothesis of Sudden Activation assumes that the Beacons and Portals will become inactive at some time, severing the link between the planes.
