Furwÿrmë

The furwÿrmë is an insectoid Monstrosity domesticated by the northern Fey-orc of the Wailë-Lands, used as a meat source, fiber source, and beast of burden by the northern fey-orc tribes, notable for its thick black fur and relatively docile nature. It is a distant relative of both the frost wÿrm and the purple wÿrm.    The ancestors of the furwÿrmë (the oft-speculated ur-wÿrmë) are thought to have originated from the northern Wailë-Lands during the early Age of Tranquility (see Ages of History). The fey-orc began to domesticate them during the early Age of Integrity, and the furwÿrmë reached its current form during the late Age of Integrity.   All members of the Wÿrmë family spin silky fibers from their abdomen, originally an evolutionary adaptation to provide safe and comfortable nests for their larvae. These fibers are initially liquid, hardened by the process of being drawn out across an expanse at least ten feet wide. The omnivorous furwÿrmë have long since lost the pure predatory instincts of their cousins and thus have far less need to construct traps for prey. Thus, their silk dries much faster than other wÿrmësilks and is noticeably less sticky.    Furwÿrmë are notably unintelligent. They are easily herded into place not only by the few Bankhur present in the northern fey-orc tribes, but by the smaller hybrid carkhur-hundë, bred by the tribes to survive the harsher winters of the Wailë-Lands.   Though furwÿrmë are highly valuable due to their brute strength and slow maturation, they are occasionally slaughtered for meat (especially when too old and infirm to pull their weight as pack animals). Furwÿrmë meat is traditionally cooked slowly for maximum tenderness. The slaughter of a furwÿrmë is seen in fey-orc society as an occasion of enormous gravity, and the meat is usually salted, dried, and preserved for months and sometimes years to come. The tail meat (seen as the most desirable cut) is typically heavily spiced and buried in the ground with a small stone marker placed over it; when another fey-orc tribe settles near this marker (sometimes years or even decades after it is buried), it is dug up and served to the tribe's elders as a great delicacy.
