Crown-Fire Grove
The Crown-Fire Grove is a thicket of trees at the far western edge of the Western Woods that contains a rare portal to the Autumn Court of the Feywild. This portal is heavily guarded by a colony of peléans who live on the Material Plane.
The portal at the heart of the grove emerges at the far summerward edge of the Autumn Court, near the throne of Selúne.
Ecosystem
The primary tree species in this deciduous forest are red oak and red maple, with a few other varieties of oak present, as well as hornbeam and black cherry. Fungi, particularly lichen colonies and mushrooms, are abundant and extraordinarily diverse. Sages suspect these decomposer plants draw energy not only from the constantly falling leaves, but also from the confluence of nearby extraplanar energy from both the Elemental Plane of Fire and the Feywild.
The primary Fey inhabitants of the grove are the peléan nymphs. Kitsune are occasionally spotted hunting in the area, usually looking to capture squirrels, chipmunks, quail, and the occasional wild turkey (though these are often difficult prey, as the turkeys of this region are notoriously aggressive).
Ecosystem Cycles
Within a mile radius of the Feywild portal itself, the Crown-Fire Grove exists in a state of perpetual autumn. The leaves of its trees fall steadily, grow back quickly, and are a constant shade of brilliant red. A variety of unique species of mushrooms draw additional nutrients from the rich volcanic soil and deposit them within the trees to compensate for the relative lack of chlorophyll production.
