Riker would request that other members of the Maquis be assigned inder his command, including those who had served with him during their theft of the USS Defiant. While Starfleet was initially very reluctant to allow their newest, most combat oriented starship be crewed by former rebels, Riker was eventually able to wager his case, with compromise being that he be assigned a trusted first officerand that the ship's security detail be entirely operated by non-Maquis members
