Republic of Slanteria
While the Republic of Slanteria is the largest country in the world, it has little real power. Due mainly to its size and recent formation, Slanteria is seen by most as an experiment, one that will likely fail. The current Slanterian Master, Daigon Sloman, comes across as a fool to most, but is actually a cunning politician who may yet surprise the world stage. (Think early America, with less guns and already having the full size of the country)
The Republic of Slanteria is the largest country in Omnisia; however, it is also the youngest only being a decade old. Slanteria was originally a conglomerate of tribes and city states before being united by Amalyth Phob in 826 FE. Slanteria is mostly human, but is a very diverse population with with large populations of half-orcs, dwarves, and elves.
Government: If there was one word to describe Slanteria it would be: unique. The government is no different. Each town elects a representative to send to Kauluna to participate in the Gordian Chamber. Each Representative acts in the best interest of their community and developes laws that govern all Slanterians. These representatives are known as Gordians. The Gordians also acts as the political leade of the town they represent, although, due to the slow nature of the Gordian Chamber, many towns have started to elect a Vice-Gordian who acts as the local leader while the Gordian is in Kauluna. Currently, the Gordian Chamber has 143 Gordians. The Chamber is lead by one person, known as the Master, who is elected by the majority of the population. The current Master is Diagon Sloman, a half-orc politician from Kauluna.
Elections
While there have only been two elections for Master, both have been vicious and marred with controversy. Master elections are administered by the Goridians in the towns they represent. They are responsible for counting the ballots and determining the local winner. They then bring the results to the Gordian Chamber and announce the winner for their town. Whoever wins in the most towns is elected as the new Master. Amalyth Phob won the first election in 831 FE serving a second term. However, she declined to serve a third term and instead paved the way for new leadership. Diagon Sloman won the recent election on the first of Hordus and is currently serving the first year of his first term. Amalyth Phob presented Diagon Sloman with a silver laurel with 143 leaves at his corrnation ceremony. A token she says will be passed from Master to Master. It is a reminder of peace and unity in Slanteria and a reminder that the wearer must be a master of peace and unity if this experiment will succeed. After Diagon Sloman's corrnation, she disappeared without a word. Most expected her to stay in the public spotlight and guide the new Master, but no one knows where she retired or even if she is still alive.
Controversy of the Second Election
This last election was not a close election. In fact, Diagon Solman won 126 towns. However, Verdoh Calamant--a nobleman from southern Slanteria--called the election corrupt and accused several Gordians of rigging the election in favor of Solmon. Calamant is well known for his opposition to unification and his hatred of Amalyth Phob. Calamant himself only won 8 towns.
Gordian Elections
Gordian elections occur every three years. Currently, there have been three elections. There are 53 large towns or cities in Slanteria. These cities tend to be the most competative with multiple candidates. Gordian elections are adminstered locally and in various ways. However, it is forbidden for the current Gordian or any candidates to be involved in the election planning our counting process. In the case of a change in Gordian, the winning candidate will travel with the previous Gordian to the first session in the Gordian Chamber and will be presented to the new Chamber. If there is no change, the Goridan will announce themself. However, the rest of the country is made up of small farming or fishing communites. These communites generally choose the person they like best or a village elder. Gordian elections occur every three years and in the past three elections, there has been very little turnover in these small communites. In most cases, the previous tribal or city-state leaders have been elected Gordians over the past decade. In some cases, the children or family members of these old leaders have been elected. In the larger cities, old tribal factions have emerged around election time and in some cases threatened the peace. While Slanterians overwhelmingly support unification, the frequent elections tend to bring out those old warring habbits. Those like Verdoh Calamant who opposed and still oppose unification often point out this pattern and try to exploit Slanteria's warring past.
Culture: Slanteria is the melting pot of the continent. Each reigon and each town is so different from the next that it seems the only thing every Slanterian shares is the fact they live in Slanteria. During the uification, the multitude of tribes and city states did not give up their culture and traditions. Instead they mixed it all together. Slanterians adopted the traditions of their neighbors while continuing their own or replaced traditons with others.
As a result of this melting pot, Slanterians have developed a reputation for wearing colorful clothes with many patterns. Amalyth Phob encouraged the colorful fashion during her tenure as a way to bridge the distinguishing tribes and city-states that once clashed. The Slanterian banner is a combination of every banner that exsited before the unification.
Slanterians are very passionate and hot headed. Yet, despite this, they are considered some of the most hosipitable people in the east. They are generally accepting of others; however, there is a large faction of Slanterians who opposed unification and despise the different cultures mixing with one another.
