The Clean Getaway
"A vessel of fair wood and blindingly blanched sails. The Clean Getaway is a fair ship, but feared on the sea." -A sailors recount of the vessel
The Clean Getaway is one of the sister ships captained by the Ratfolk Pirate, Francisco Veramini. Often found alongside her companion, the brigantine known as Dirty Work, the Clean Getaway is a recognizable and infamous ship in the Sea of Karpemnenos and the Sea of Eberus. The Clean Getaway has found her way in and out of numerous scuffles with both the The Empire of Veret, and The Haskanian Empire. Sometimes working as a privateer for either side, raiding shipping lanes.
Like numerous other pirate ships, she favors speed in order to get out of pitched battles. The Clean Getaway is the perfect ship for escape after pillaging. Originally a clipper ship build by the Empire of Veret. She was stolen during her maiden voyage by Captain Francisco Veramini during a stormy night. managing to surprise the Vereti Fleet, a small boarding party managed to get aboard the Vereti ship, then known as the Serrat. They managed to climb aboard and commandeer the vessel by capturing the captain and crew under sword point. They managed to slip away during the storm and evaded a short chase by the pursuing Vereti Navy. Given a new coat and sails to match, the ship flies under a new name commanded by a dreaded captain of the seas.
Piracy and Privateering
Since being stolen, the ship has served on numerous raids, robberies, and attacks in the name of coin. During the years of 4330-36, it sailed around the coasts of Patharnae seeking gold and glory raiding the tradelines of Haskanian and Vereti vessels. They looted chests of gold, valuable relics, and even piles of Kestre from the Haskanian mines on the island. It was present during a raid that would go down in the islands history.
The Raid of the Bathkurid
A Haskanian fleet, carrying a princes hoard of kestre. Enough to create enough magical swords to arm a legion, or the create an Anivance for the Great Haskanian Palace. The fleet was made up of six military vessels. Large frigates with ballistae and catapults manned by highly trained Kahser Marines of the Haskanian Navy. The reward of a lifetime for a suicide mission. Any pirates caught in Haskana's waters around Patharnae would be drowned and dragged by the vessels they attacked, or slain right there if they were nobody important. The attack would have to be quick. Give them no time to recognize they were being attacked and get away with the gold without getting suck by flying rocks from the catapults. The fleet would be sailing by the Zut'hur Islands. The Zut'hur islands were little but craggy rocks dropped in the ocean by the gods, but they would serve as excellent cover for the sister ships of Veramini.
The ships waited between the towering spires of jagged, porous rock. The clean Getaway covered in dark nets to act as camolauge and Dirty Work acting as the major bulk, hiding further up ahead. As the Haskanian Fleet approached, the diviners aboard the Haskanian vessels had warned of possible ruin, but the ships were already late. Someone sabotaged their ships in the last port leaving them behind schedule a week. The sailor who did it was never caught, but they quietly made their way aboard the Clean Getaway half a kilometer from shore.
The Merchant Captain decided to take the risk, believing that the rocks would provide cover. The small waterways between each rocky island were to thin to be navigated safely by most captains. But, Veramini was not like most captains. Lyingf in wait, he gingerly maneuvered his vessels further into an ambush position, between to tall rocks that pointed at the sky like fingers. As the fleet moved forward, the Clean Getaway popped out of hiding and ran up the back. The sails unfurled and arcane winds pushed into the ship by onboard outlaw arcanists. The Clean Getaway quickly approached the rear Haskanian Vessel. They hooked the back of the ship and climbed aboard, lobbing firebombs on the deck to scorch the lightly armored marines. They pushed the ship forward ramming it into the back of the next nearest Haskanian vessel, using the rear cargo ship as cover. The Haskanians would not open fire on a ship hiding behind such valuable cargo.
As the fleet tried to reorganize, Dirty Work captained by Veramini's closest hand, being instructed by the Ratkin himself through magic approached the front Haskanian vessel. Ramming into the side they boarded it taking control and capturing the marines in a surprise attack. Using the onboard ballistae and catapult, they fired on the other Haskanian ships, crippling the protection of the cargo vessels. As the Clean Getaway quickly made its way up to the side of the first cargo vessel, a large ship known as the Bathkurid. The crew surrendered out of shock and fear. They were mainly sailors who saught no death at the end of a pirate's blade. After a thourough search the kestre was brought aboard, and the Haskanian vessels on the other side decided it would be now or never. The remaining vessel, a ship known as the Uthkil fired upon the Clean Getaway, one of the hits knocking into the Bathkurid. The Clean Getaway took two shots into her hulls, marking the wood and making sizeable holes in the hull. In response, Dirty Work fired upon the Haskanian Vessel to cover for the Clean Getaway. As a final attack against the Clean Getaway, the Uthkil fired chained bolas from their ballistae, shattered the masts of the speedy ship. Crippled, it began to sail into the canals of the Zut'Hur islands. As it appeared the heist was soon to fail, a druid came to the aid of Veramini from below deck. One of his lieutenants named Sharp Eye Seina. She called forth her command over the elements and conjured a wave that knocked into the side of the Uthkil, and it was thrown upon the sharp rocks of the Zut'hur islands. Wounded, the Clean Getaway made her escape, slowly followed by her sister. One of the ships was left with the bounty of kestre. Veramini thought if the Empire had recieved some of their shipment, they would not need to hunt them down so hungrily.
They made their way to shore, hiding in one of the pirate havens founded in the coves of Patharnae, and the Clean Getaway was repaired after it's harrowing flight.
