Repelsteeltje

(Dutch) Rumpelstiltskin

Repelsteeltje is a parlour game enjoyed in well-to-do Elf households. It is most commonly played during larger but intimate dinner parties where an icebreaker is necessary to bring a comfortable levity to the room.

Setup

All players should break into a series of teams. Being a family game, the most common teams are established by household. But don't let "convention" restrict you!   The host or hostess will start "the first round" by calling one of their slaves to the front of the room using their Gnomish name. If this is you, take advantage of this moment to set the tone for your game - give your property some well-deserved verbal abuse or mockery as it approaches.

Objective

The game is simple - be the first team to guess either the slave's birthname or its root meaning.

Order of Play

In a wagerless game (see below), order of play is established in order of ascending age of the youngest player on each team. It's only right for the children to go first afterall!

On Your Team's Turn

In sequence, each team MAY ask the slave one "Yes/No" question about their personal history or ancestral home, which must be answered honestly, and then makes a guess.

Ending the Round

Play continues in a series of turns until one team registers a successful guess.

Subsequent Rounds

Subsequent rounds are done with another slave from either the hosting household or a guest's attending.

Raising the Stakes

As with all good games, friendly wagers are strongly encouraged!   Prior to each series of turns, each team may secretly put forth a wager (most often a few silver or gold pieces) by extending it in a clenched fist using their right hand. All teams reveal their wager simultaneously.   In order of ascending wager, a team drops their coins into the pot while declaring either "FIRST" or "LAST" to add their team to the turn queue. In this way, turn order is builds out the 'center' set by the cheapest team.   The winner of the round collects all wagers in the pot.   Variant: For even higher stakes play and sense of increasing odds, make the pot collected at the end of the game (preferably one round per team) by the team with the most wins.

Conclusion

Inevitably each round includes slurs, demeaning guesses, and roaring laughter. Great fun for the whole family, Repelsteeltje is sure to please all your guests.
