Chaos Ore Material in Ollaras | World Anvil

Chaos Ore

Chaos Ore is so rare that most are unaware that it exists. Unlike most ores it is not found by digging down into a mine or deposited by the strike of a meteor. No, this is generated by friction between planes. Back before the universe that is known the demon realm used to punch holes from their plane of existence to the mortal ones. This left behind residue that once condensed became known as Chaos Ore. Now, unless there is a full on demon invasion to a mortal plane the only place to find the ore is in the chaos plane. The Chaos plane is still a mortal one which borders the Fairylands and Elemental planes but can still be accessed from the Material plane with the right spells.

Properties

Material Characteristics

Chaos Ore looks like a puddle of rainbow ooze that stays in place even if it looks like a bubbling ball. If one were to touch it unprotected it would feel slightly squishy and warm.

Physical & Chemical Properties

This ore would be considered very mutative. A life form, including a constructed one with a soul, would be quickly mutated by it or simply absorbed into the mass. Dealing with Chaos Ore requires special preparations.
Small mutations can consist of suddenly being able to do magic. It can also alter appearance and lead to madness of all sorts. It's not uncommon of some kind of crystal growth to spring up on an infected person though a person mutated by Chaos Ore cannot spread this affliction.

Origin & Source

When the plane of demons punches a hole through to the mortal world residue gets left behind. Usually it dissipates quickly but the larger the 'hole' the more likely it can condense into Chaos Ore. Only in the plane of Chaos does it condense no matter how small the hole is leaving the plane pockets of the stuff.

Life & Expiration

Chaos Ore deteriorates quickly in sunlight unless its on the plane of chaos. If put in a light tight box it can survive transport however and be refined into a more stable substance.

History & Usage

Refinement

The only one left known to possess the secrets to refinement is Lograth.

Manufacturing & Products

Lograth has used refined Chaos Ore to build weapons, special blades with magical properties that connect a patron of sorts to a user. Some examples are the Lightning Blade that connects directly to him, and the Light Blade which connects to an angel.

Hazards

Because Chaos Ore is very mutative it is a large hazard to a natural area.

Environmental Impact

After a demon incursion, if enough of a residue build up creates Chaos Ore it is common for animals to accidentally stumble into it, using it up and becoming new and powerful monsters in the area.

Lograth has created special storage containers and isn't sharing the secret of them to anyone.
