One tends to begin as a wrench jockey, someone who does minor repairs. they may become an inventor or mechanic, and even further to an artificer or restoration specialist.
Payment & Reimbursement
they are usually self-employed, and pay is equal to the quality/difficulty of their work or product. wrench jockies naturally get paid very little, and artificers can make a fortune from thier wares....especially if they are designed for war.
Other Benefits
the main benefits are the recognition that comes from the attribution to technology, the skill to build a plethora of time-saving machines, being able to repair your own mechanical equipment, and the potential fame from making a beloved construct.

Usually as architectural infrastructure, and makers of life-improving products.
Social Status
surprisingly very low for the most part. engineers are often taken for granted unless they have significant renown, although it is far more integral in gnomish and goblin society.

mostly metal and wood, though some can use more exotic materials, such as mithril, crystal, radioactive material, and magic.

it can vary petween engineers. some may have a simply workshop of stone, tools strewn everywhere; and others may have a lavish bronze vault, complete with heavy machinery and cosmetic appliances.
