The Art of Illusions

The ability to manipulate how others or yourself perceive reality

Created & Written by Khali Crawford | Inspired by Perception Manipulation Article on Superpower Wiki

Effect

The user can manipulate perception, which is the brain's processing of sensory information to organize and interpret it. Forms of sensory information include visual (sight), haptic (touch), temporal (time) information. By manipulating perception, various effects can be achieved. An illusion, for example, is produced using this ability and so is the removal of perception itself.   With a sufficient deal of control over this ability, it becomes possible to quickly and easily shape even complex “illusions” for others - to the point where even those who are aware of what is happening to begin to doubt their own senses. There doesn’t seem to be any way to tell when this is being done, and as such, there is no clear defense. Used on one's self, this power can render one effectively immune to any other form of illusion, as they would be able to perceive the underlying reality near-instantly. It is also a potent tool for gathering information, as it can be used to experience distant events, among other things.

Side/Secondary Effects

  • Reality Perception may resist this power (but not immutable or immune).
  • Because they can manipulate their own perception, users of Self Perception are slightly resistant.
  • Someone of a strong heart, will, or desire may be able to see through the induced perception.

Manifestation

Illusions of this type can come in all types of forms, shapes, sizes, and colors. The target may be able to see something that isn't actually there or perceive reality in a way that is favorable to the Illusionist.

Gestures & Ritual

Ritual

Select powerful and complex Illusions may require a certain ritual or requirement before they can be cast. This can range from the target answering a question falsely to the target making eye contact with the Illusionist. An example of this is the Ourm's Locke, a spell which, when cast, forces one to become increasingly more paranoid if they do not trust others around them.
Applied Restriction
  • Illusions will be less effective on beings with Immunity to Magic
  • The more targets of an Illusion, the less complex it can be

Fatal Illusions

Illusions can be shaped and designed so well that they can impose intense stress and fatigue on the target's mind to the point where they can sustain physical damage. Such Illusions can also be used to destabilize an enemy or drive them to insanity. A prime example of this is the Night of 1 Million Horrors, a disgustingly powerful and terrible spell. The spell can only target one person but makes the target believe they are being attacked by 1 million demonic monsters for a night that seems to last forever. A skilled illusionist can make a target fight these never-ending demons for years and centuries on end, when, in reality, only a few minutes have passed. Such a spell forbids the mind from 'sleeping' and can instantly tire a person out, or kill them.
