Chyro, Last of the Adamantine

The ancient Umbral and Adamantine hybrid dragon known as Chyro, the last of his original species.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Chyro's body has suffered over the years, his scales have many spots in them where the weaker flesh underneath is visible and vulnerable. Several of his teeth are missing and so are some of his claws.

Physical quirks

Being a mix of Adamantine and Umbral, he is one of the few dragons that doesn't have traditional breath, spewing out either pure flying shards of Adamantine rock or exhaling a deep shadow onto battlefields, blinding and inhibiting the enemies senses.

Special abilities

Chyro, being an ancient dragon, is imbued with the Magic of the Ancients, and as such is a powerful spellcaster, using his own stamina and vitality to conjure powerful draconic spells.

Personal history

Chyro is the last of his kind, the only Adamantine Dragon left in existence after Rylbray eradicated his kind. He was a younger dragon when the First Eclipse happened and Ryblray began the Culling of the Ancients. Most of his kind hid in the material plane but Chyro panicked, he saw a direct way to survive against these odds and fled into a different plane, the Shadow Plane, to hide.

His plan worked and the Shadow Plane hid him from Rylbray but it was a dangerous place for a younger dragon, everything but the weakest undead was hunting him and he was prey, no longer higher up on the food chain like he was in the material plane.

He found refuge with a family of Umbral Dragons, they were wary of him at first but with all of them being some form of dragon, they formed a kinship with each other and Chyro found a family to stay with until he returned to the Material Plane.

He scoured the ancient ruins of fallen old civilizations of Shadefolk in the Shadow Plane, hoping to find ways back to the material plane but he struggled even finding a lead to go on. Months passed, then years, and with each year he spent in the Shadow Plane fighting, surviving and scavenging the shadows continuously seeped into him. He was becoming more than just an Adamantine Dragon, but an Umbral Dragon as well, becoming a hybrid of the two.

Even more years passed and he still could not find a way home to see if his birth family survived and his hope faltered, he thought he was just stuck here so he decided to make the best of it. He remained with his found Umbral Dragon family until an opportunity to go back home presented itself to him, perhaps even thousands of years from now.

He resided in the Shadow Plane with his family until a strange force, a humanoid, appeared in the plane and declared himself lord of the Shadow Plane, the Empty lord. He demanded a powerful companion to rule over and take into battle against the material plane in his incursions. Chyro, along with the Umbral Dragons, were hesitant to allow someone to rule over the Shadow Plane, as the lawless wastes of the Shadow Plane didn't need a ruler.

The Empty Lord didn't take no for an answer however, and he began to cull the Umbral Dragons just like Rylbray did to the dragons of the Material Plane, so Chyro, in an act of martyrdom, knelt in servitude to the Empty Lord to prevent the extinction of another species of dragons. It did not directly save them however, as Chyro and all the Umbral Dragons were enslaved by the Empty Lord and used as troops and fodder in his rule.

The Dragons and Chyro all served under the tyranical rule of the Empty Lord until a band of heroes made their way deep into the Shadow Plane and killed the Empty Lord.

Their freedom was not granted however, as the insane power vacuum allowed what was left of Rylbray to take control shortly after, along with his new acolyte Cedrick. The Umbral Dragons were not given a chance to be free and Chyro, being a mix of two incredibly powerful dragons, was always used by these tyrants to keep the Umbral's in line. His name was feared by them and he himself became nothing but an extension of these tyrants.

Even after Cedrick, the power vacuum kept getting filled, with a false Fae King afterwards and when a group led into the Shadow Plane by an Umbral Dragon named Vili came to free the Umbral Dragons, after they dealt with the Fae King an entity known as the Father, the worst of the Shadow Plane's tyrants, immediately took control and fused with Chyro, forcing the Umbral Dragons to construct an effigy of terror and prepare themselves for a ritual of mass death.

He forced them to dig their own graves, and Chyro to shovel the dirt on top of them.

The Father fused with Chyro and assumed complete control of his actions, spells and sometimes even his thoughts, effectively killing Chyro and puppeteering his corpse. Chyro was still technically alive somewhere in there however, and it seems that Vili knew this.

During the Battle of Shadow's Maelstrom, Chyro's body was grievously wounded by a planned explosive attack by the Guardian's of the Planes and the Father flew the both of them to the top of his effigy of terror and suffering as a battle commenced, the outcome would dictate the existence of the Material Plane itself.

Chyro watched on trapped in his own body as the fight raged on and he was sure this was his end, he accepted it, finally having an opportunity to rest from the control of all these tyrants but with a single, seconds long moment, Vili severed the connection between Chyro and The Father and gave him one, single command.

To be free.

Chyro launched himself upwards and slammed his neck down on the tough roots of the effigy, severing his connection with the Father and forcefully ejecting him off of his body.

The fight essentially ended there, Father was slain and Chyro, on his last leg, was healed by the party. He was alive and free, so were the Umbral Dragons, and better yet he made it back home after 4000 years.

Show spoiler
After the fight he went on to make a home for himself in the place he named Chyro's Rest, where the effigy of tear collapsed onto a nearby shore along with a cobbled together flotilla and strangely enough, what seemed to be a spaceship. He offered it as refuge to the Guardians who freed him and the Umbral Dragons. He also raises a clutch of Adamantine Dragon eggs his old family hid behind all those years ago, and with time he will no longer hold the title Last of the Adamantine.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Chyro was the one to sever the Father's physical form from himself and provide a direct "in" for the Guardians to attack and kill The Father.
