Wyverns Species in Ogygian Tales | World Anvil

Wyverns

Overview

The closest most Ogygians may see to a true dragon is a wyvern, but even that is a frightening prospect. Wyverns are large, winged, reptilian beasts, incapable of speech but possessing a keen intelligence. They can learn remarkably quickly and often use this to identify humanoid transit routes and weak points in strongholds, making them the terrors of the skies. While obligate carnivores, they almost never scavenge; instead, they will hunt down whatever killed a carcass they find, making it almost impossible to trap them with baited kills. Many have adapted to life on the coasts as well as their natural forest and mountain homes. The only relief is that they are almost entirely solitary as adults, only forming packs for safety while young.

Only the wyrmriders of Spartoi have successfully domesticated wyverns, but some siren communes have formed a mutually-beneficial relationship with coastal wyverns. The sirens’ magic songs can send ships crashing onto land, which allows the wyverns easier access to the delicious crew, and the wyverns defend the sirens from threats by land and air.

Wyverns can be represented by any wyvern or flying drake. You can also reskin large birds or flying dinosaurs to represent an Ogygian wyvern. In all cases, Ogygian wyverns can speak no languages.
