The Wandering Knights
The Wandering Knights are a holy order who protect travellers on remote roads. Devout followers of Xatha, they are committed to maintaining the ease and safety of travel across great distances, fighting bandits, monsters, and occasionally the agents of rulers who obstruct travel across their land. They are a welcome sight to those on the road, and are well known despite their small number due the great number of songs and tales about their exploits.
The Knights are only loosely organized, travelling alone or in small groups and acting largely on their own initiative. Itinerant wanderers, they roam across the world, making sure no path is without the Knights protection for too long. They gather in significant numbers only occasionally at holy sites to Xatha, usually places of great natural beauty, where they discuss events and initiate new members. Members are only accepted when recomended by other Knights, which usually occurs after knights have started hearing word of their exploits among travellers.
To ease their journeys most knights travel mounted, usually on a horse but sometimes on other creatures such as camels, hippogriffs, or large dogs (for the small number of halflings and gnomes among them), and a few are even known to take to the sea. Few carry many possesions, usually just enough to fit in their pack and saddlebags, relying on friendly strangers to give them food and supplies. Most are skilled warriors who fight with swords, spears, or bows, though their weapons and abilities vary dramatically by individual, and the order includes more then a few users of magic. Despite their name, few are originally nobles, most are from humble backgrounds and felt drawn to the road.
Though widely regarded as heros, especially among peasants and other rural folk, the Knights frequently make enemies of local rulers. Though not frequent targets, many Knights will oppose any actions of rulers to restrict travel or trade, down to tarrifs and military blockades. Due to their purposefully low level of organization, members do not need or seek permission before attacking checkpoints and even harrassing armies. This has brought them the ire of many kings and warlords, but only strengthen their reputations as folk heros amongst the common folk
