Naga

The Naga are a race of snake humanoids, residing in the desert of Dreagor. They are very reclusive, very strong and agile, and VERY violent. These creatures were almost not granted status as sentient races by the council because of this violent tendency. Every Naga must watch their back at all times. This violence lives unchecked inside their camp, in the form of gladiator fights, back alley mugging, and nearly common murder. Some Naga, have renounced their violent tendencies, and live out in the rest of the world peacefully. It is VERY offensive to call a Naga a “worm” and it should never be done. A Naga is born from an egg, hatching 6 months after laying. A young Naga is called a hatchling, and an adolescent is called a snakelet.

Major language groups and dialects

Culture and cultural heritage

Naga culture can be described with one Naga phrase; “Instire Yos Ssnan,” Live For Battle. The Naga love to battle, fight, kill, and it is a major part of the Naga’s own city. The throne is under constant battle between the seven highborn Naga clans, and the king must fight to keep himself, and his kingdom, alive. Live For Battle is a double meaning because in the Naga city, without knowing battle, without fighting, you will certainly die.

Shared customary codes and values

The Naga love battle. They love to kill, steal, and are a generally evil race. Though some find this barbaric, the Naga regard it as common. You will find no shred of moral code amongst most Naga, but some have been known to draw the line at killing needlessly, although not saying “thank you” counts as a reason for most of them.

Average technological level

The Naga are not a race for technology. If a sword will kill something, then they will use it.

Common Etiquette rules

The Naga, though very violent and most likely evil, are big sticklers for manners. Saying please and thank you is burned into the very brains of their children, often through beatings, and ending every statement in “sir” is a must.

Common Dress code

Most Naga wear whatever they want, but highborn Naga are required to wear a sash with their clan insignia on it, and shoulder pads.

Art & Architecture

Naga buildings use a lot of curved lines rather than strait ones, and end up with domes at the top of their buildings. Most important building feature ornately carved snake-shaped pillars

Common Customs, traditions and rituals

Each month, a coliseum battle is held between the seven highborn Naga clans and their champions. Each champion is a member of the clan themselves, and will fight in a free for all battle to the death. The clan that currently holds the throne will announce a twist one week before the battle. Common ones are rabid Spidorcions in the arena, or the champion must not wear armor. The last champion standing is the winner of the arena games and their clan is granted the throne.
Once a year, on the 15th of Sun, the Naga hold a celebration called the Warstice. That day marks the day that the War of the Wastes started. The Naga regard that war as the “Raanss’Est Ssnan,” the Grandest Battle, making it almost sacred to them.

Birth & Baptismal Rites

A Naga born to a highborn clan will be anointed with black sand from the ribs of the Great Reptilian.

Coming of Age Rites

When a young Naga turns thirteen, they must make the pilgrimage to the ribs of the Great Reptilian, and carve their birth month rune into the corresponding if the eight ribs using a ceremonial dagger. They must return with the bone shards, their ceremonial daggers, and pouch of black sand that is only found near the bones. In addition, a highborn Naga must also carve their clan insignia next to their birth month.

Funerary and Memorial customs

A Naga dead of old age is to be fed to Spidorcions. A Naga dead of old age is a coward in Naga culture, excepting war veterans. A Naga dead in battle is to be burned in the ceremonial flame. A Naga murdered is to be buried.

Common Taboos

It is very important NEVER to call a Naga a worm. They take extreme offense to this. And offense is a reason to kill you. A member of a highborn Naga clan is never to (openly) disrespect their family, their champion, or their other clans. Plots to kill people are fine, just do not renounce or disrespect your family. This will result in exile and banishment.

Common Myths and Legends

The Naga are descendants and the chosen race of the God of Lies and Deceit. The symbol of the God of Lies is a snake, and Naga are one of the most evil and dishonest races. Most Naga seem to acknowledge this as true, but don’t particularly worship him at all.

Historical figures

King Salan, the starter of the War of the Wastes is a very important figure in Naga culture.

Ideals

Gender Ideals

If there is one redeeming quality of the Naga, it is that they are not sexist in the slightest. They view both genders on equal ground. “If a woman is as great of a fighter as a man, why should she be viewed differently?“ Is a famous quote from a Naga war general when questioned about sexism.

Major organizations

Most Naga are citizens under the Naga Tribe.
