Hesterherre

The Hesterherre is a large peninsula in western Apenrike between the Inner Sea and the Disparate and Parched Seas. It is dominated geographically by dry steppes that stretch from the Langdrank River and the Elven Wall in the east to the Seaspine Mountains and the Coringian Channel on its western coast. The oldest residents of the area are the dwarves of Rikhem who have been here since the Great Undertaking when they dispersed. The dwarves of Rikhem spend almost all their lives under the mountains and only emerge to trade with the horse peoples to their east. They are exceedingly distrustful of the Coringians who have established mining provinces to their west and intentionally avoid contact with the westerners. The horsemen of the Hesterherre are of Nordic descent and left Ankomst early in the Age of Kings. They settled on the steppe of the Hesterherre and domesticated the indigenous horses. They are thought of as the world’s premier light cavalry for their lightning quick hit and run tactics. They specialize in mounted archery and can fire accurately at full speed. They live in nomadic tribes but stick to their home ranges, which although large, don’t overlap with neighboring tribes and clans. The exception to this is that once per year, in the Spring, they meet on the shores of Broken Axe Lake for a month of trading, competition, and celebration. This is when the chieftans all plan out the year and divvy up recesses. The dwarves of Rikhem take advantage of this gathering and always send a large trading party to deal with the barbarian nomads and barter for supplies for the coming year.

Seekers Market

although not technically a part of Miriador, it is generally accepted to fall within the protective boundaries of the kingdom. Miriadorian forces rarely if ever travel west of the Belting River, and the forces of Sylarbor rarely if ever come south of the Rambling Gap, making the location an ideal spot for those who wish to remain outside the jurisdiction of authority. Seeker’s market was established originally as a wayspot for travelers on the Coast Road, but has over the years developed to take on a much larger role than a simple re-supply point. It is widely renowned as a market for contraband goods, illegal magic, stolen wares, and items of the darkhold. There is no Jarl, but the market is run by Wallson, the Marketmaster who is just the wealthiest, most influential merchant of the lot.

Bastards Bay

Originally founded by the illegitimate son of a Miriadorian King, this town is a bustling, if not overly prosperous seaport. Pirates can come and go from here with less scrutiny than would be paid in the larger ports of Vilion and Tyrlon. There is a smuggling business that rivals that of Seeker’s Market, but the local Jarl demands his taxes and holds the black market economy in check.

Brigantes

Hub of the Antelope Nation. Trading post and ceremonial site. Site of the eternal flame, the star stones, and the sunchaser sacrificial rock.

Harstad

founded by the royal family exiled from Kaldhavn. Large military build-up and mining operations. The third king of Harstad, Haval the Great, had many wives and sired many sons. He strengthened the Harstad military and encouraged his sons to explore the far reaches of Apenrike. In 75 CE, two of his sons traveled east looking for new lands to settle. Mirias and Hagnar stopped at the mouth of the Belting River and were surprised to find elves. They struck up a good relationship with the elven nation and its king, Gudrun the Wise, who told them of his battles with orcs on his northern border, and that he would be happy to have men on his right flank on the eastern side of the Belting. Myrias established his kingdom at the mouth of the Belting, building the great city of Vilion in cooperation with the elves and founding the kingdom of Miriador. Hagnar sailed up the Belting claiming the land north of the Elven gate settling between the Elvish and Dwarvish lands, building a great keep at the mouth of the Cinnamon River on the Elvish frontier, and naming it Norgaard.

Mizenholm

Doden Drengrson, Freyr of Mizenholm, an aged but still very physically imposing ruler who sits on a high stone seat above the assembly. He stands up and walks around, moving among the newcomers to welcome them to his town. His “right hand man”, is a hulking mountain of a viking named Harald Stonefist. The slave camp is run by Bathir . His most trusted Hersir is a man named Osting One-eye, who has but one eye. He doesn’t bother wearing a patch and sports an empty socket and a heavily scarred countenance.

Norgaard

Norgaard has served as a borderland between the kingdoms of men and elves and encroaching and expanding forces of the Darkhold. Conducts robust trade with the Dwarven kingdom of Skuffhimmel. Although it is a kingdom of men, there is great diversity in the population, with substantial numbers of half-elves and dwarves, and even a few half-orcs, although the latter does its best to blend in with the human population. Although founded as a kingdom by the descendants of Haval the Great, Norgaard had been ruled for the last 300 years by the Krigsherre, or military leader assigned by the previous ruler. The Krigsherre has the powers of a king but the title is not hereditary and is instead bestowed upon the highest ranking member of the military council when the Krigsherre dies. The military council consists of the Krigsherre, the Grand Master of the Order of Heimdall, the head of the Skogsmen Rangers, the Marshall of the Army, the Archbishop of Thunderpriests, and the Captain of the Homeguard. The Order of Heimdall is a sect of powerful warriors who work in the name of Heimdall as guardians of the kingdom of Norgaard and, by extension, the race of Man. They act as guardians for caravans within the realm and along the trade routes into neighboring kingdoms. They are also the shock troops of heavy infantry and heavy cavalry that are thrown into the heaviest fighting of the kingdom’s pitched battles against the forces of the Darkhold. The Skogsmen Rangers are capable woodsmen who patrol the Elven frontier, the Wastes, even into the Wyvernslair Mountains to stem the onslaught of orcs, goblins, ogres, trolls, and other vile creatures who roam the uncivilized lands. The Marshall of the Army is leader of the Army of Norgaard, based in Norgaard Keep. They man the city walls of Rivermeet, Norgaard Keep, Riverbend, and Tankvara, and maintain enough troops to make up the bulk of the forces that Norgaard could field at any time. The Thunderpriests are a fanatical order of warrior priests in the service of Thor based out of Norgaard Keep. Numbering in the hundreds, they are a substantial force yet rarely undertake a mission with a number of more than 6-8 priests.

Olhall

The seat of the King of Skuffhimmel, when entering Olhall a visitor is greeted with immense granite statues of the great dwarves that founded and defended this mountain kingdom: Gunter Verlassen the leader of the Undertaking, Adalgar the Devout, Skorm Bloodaxe, and Berowalt Son of Oldrick the Sapper. Olhall is also the ancestral home of the Order of Silverbeards, the warrior-priests of Skuffhimmel who served the kingdom in the name of Clangeddin Giantkiller. These devotees of the Father of Battle played a significant role in the founding of Skuffhimmel, and of Olhall specifically. It was their order who formed the backbone of the dwarven army who established and held the mountains and hills east of the Wyvernslair in the Age of Kings. It was also the Silverbeards who raced ahead of the dwarven host in 483 CE to assist Miriador in their most desperate hour. Under the leadership of Berowalt Sapperson, the Silverbeards may have been the deciding factor (along with the appearance of Valkyries) in the victory of Miriadorian forces over the marauding Baranian army. To this day, those dwarves killed in the Battle of the Eastfields lay in honor in the Dwarfcairns outside the Temple of Thrud on the banks of the Barleymeade River. Although outside the boundaries of Skuffhimmel, the Dwarfcairns remain one of the most holy sites to dwarves in the Northern Kingdoms and is especially important to the Silverbeards, who serve as its caretakers.

Outlands

The Outlands was originally founded as a stepping off point into the Wilderlands for those looking for adventure or resources like fur or mineral riches. It quickly became a place for those who were no longer welcome in the Empire or in the Northern Kingdoms. It exists on the edge of civilization and its population reflects that, very heavily adult male, and very rough and tumble. The Outlands is run by a local thane, who owes allegiance to no king, Ivar Goblinsbane, who inherited the title from his famous father, Cnut the Beardless. Ivar has maintained an open trading relationship with Mariarion, running boats up the Modervand river to the city of Skoverion. Ivar, in his desperation and frustrating inability to save the city or bring in more warriors, has turned to alcohol to drown his sorrows and is remarkably drunk all day, everyday.

Riga

Riga is a mining colony founded by the Coringian Empire. It is run by a local Jarl, appointed by the Emperor himself, who oversees the mining operations that supply the Empire with iron ore and salt. The majority of the mining is conducted by humanoid slaves primarily from the Wilderlands, and human slaves either captured on the Hesterherre, or bought in Greek slave markets. There are private mines operated in the colony, The Ericson Mine and the Broken Hammer mine, but they both pay a significant tax to the Empire for the privilege.

Southeast Ankomst

This map contains lands occupied by the Egyptian and the southern Greeks in the southeastern portion of the continent of Ankomst, as well as the dwarvish kingdom of Melheim.

Sparsport

Large port city on the southern Baranian coast. It is a hub for trading, including humanoid slaves coming from the Wilderlands, and mannish slaves from the Hesterherre. It is run by the trade guild, which is headed by the guildmaster. Everything here, even justice, is for sale.

The Divide

The mountainous area between the Greek city-states and the western elves.

Vestlegion Woodlands

An area of vast forest, an immense trees, occupied by the western wood elves of Ankomst.

Vilion City

Capital of Miriador and seat of the King. Home to the Hoyskole, an order of wizards that have set up a study/college/guild in the guild district.

Clan of the Eagle (Dreig)

The Eagle Clan territory comprises most of the area of soutrhern Ankomst that is south and west of the Vorcing Hills. Renowned for its peoples natural affinty for tapping into the magic of nature, the Eagle Clan produces the highest number of Swamp Druids and its leadership is often consulted at The Meeting Place for visions of the furture. The Eagle Eye is a powerful druid and member of the Eagle Clan who lives in the Vorcing Hills and is a sought-after oracle for Celts across southern Ankomst. Like the other clans, the Eagle Clan has learned to harmonize with some animals and is especially gifted at communicating with birds of prey. These birds are used for hunting and scouting, sending messages, and sometimes as guardians or attack animals. Groups of young men from the Eagle Clan will, every few years, make a pilgramge to the mountains on the far side of the Massi Desert to find and pay homage to the great eagles that live in those mountains.
