The Swamp

Surrounding Madison City is the Swamp. Louisiana is known for her bayou and marshlands and the Swamp is definitely a testament to this reputation. The Swamp is the home to several animals, critters, and people who are isolated from the rest of the world by fields of mud, grass, and trees. The Swamp is no place for the faint of heart. Besides the wide-open clearings, most of the swamp is covered in thick and unforgiving foliage, which obscures natural or artificial landmarks. Without a map and compass, one can easily become lost in the murky waters and be set upon by beasts or uncivilized folk.

Geography

The acrid odor of rotting meat and sulfuric gas bubbles dampens the misty air. Sagging branches of weeping willows dip into the murky waters where fish, snakes, and alligators slither and slide. Birds - mainly owls and crows - hide in the shadows of the trees. The sky is almost always opaque as noxious fog seeps out of the ground and encases the fields of mud and muck in its wispy grasp.   There are very few dry patches here; it's mostly bubbling puddles and sloshing piles of mud. Dead fish and other animals litter the soft ground just below the surface. With each slippery step, one might hear the faintest crunch of bones under the squelch of earthy sludge. The rivers offer little solace; they're crammed with strange and ravenous animals, ready to strike at an easy meal. Even boats are unsafe if they remain in one place for too long.
