Light-keeper

In the home, lighting and fire-keeping have been done by the resident, requiring only a small effort of will to light a hearth, lantern or gaslamp. This effort, however, is impractical at scale and lanterns in public spaces have tended to rely on a battery of spirits that either inhabit or are attracted to lantern-shrines, which are tended by light-keepers.   Light-keepers are part of a city or estate's maintenance crew, and their job is to clean and maintain the lantern-shrine, place and remove offerings, and generally tend to the spirits' needs - light spirits are simple creatures, often lacking even physical forms, and this tending is significantly less onerous than that required by most household spirits.   It is generally regarded as unskilled labour not requiring much, if any, education and is largely unregulated. The only requirements for lamp-keepers is a clean criminal record and be able to scale a ladder, and the duties are taught through on-the-job mentoring without a formal apprenticeship.   In some regions, witches'/wizards' guilds or priesthoods have tried to argue that, since it requires regular and close contact with spirits, the work shoudl fall within their domain. in others, the police or civic watch have attempted to adopt the lamp-keepers as a kind of informal watchman, since they are generally on the streets around dusk and dawn and know their neighbourhood well enough to spot things out of place. The light-keepers themselves have generally resisted efforts to close the profession.   Although the lamp-keepers' profession survived the invention of gas lamps, which carried no material benefit over spirit-lamps and introduced additional health hazards and fire risks, electrical lighting does not require such upkeep. The first electrical street lamps were installed around Tizawti's Paradise Square in 5.879, and their rapid adoption, especially in private businesses and estates, means that profession of light-keeper is already seens as a thing of the past.
