The Century Storm

A storm that would go on to last a hundred years, to the hour, began building during the afternoon following the assessination of the Shidash god Askragusis by Vešmic missionaries. Askragusis was the god of dawn, the sky, and the weather, and was the principle god of the Sanbak Islands. At the time of their death, they were inhabiting the body of their high priestess, who also died as a result.   Following xeir assessination, the god returned to xeir component elements - the weather and the sea - and grieved the betrayal and the death of xeir priestess, and a storm began to build. The missionaries were driven from the islands and the weather system followed the survivors back to their homeland, Shaia. The storm broke the minute that they made landfall at the city of Karraras, at 0847 on the morning of the 22nd of Whitemoon, 5.793, and lasted until 0847 on the morning of the 22nd of Whitemoon, 5.893.   The rain fell continuously for the duration of the storm, with gale force winds and repeated storm surges as high as 8 metres. A minimum of 200mm rain fell every 24 hours for the full century. Although the initial evacation attempt was made after the first 48 hours, many people chose to stay in their homes and wait out the storm, believing it to be a natural event. Only the citizens who left in the first two evacuations survived; after this, several major roads collapsed and rivers became impassible, cutting Karraras off entirely and preventing any further evactations. Attempts to relay messages through the storm using light-towers were broadly unsuccessful due to restricted visibility, but jetsam containing the missionaries' confessions were found in pristine condition, washed into the harbour Shaia's captial city, Khaisin, several months after the storm began.   When the storm cleared, there was no visible trace of Karraras or its inhabitants. Buildings, collapsed or washed into the harbour, had been ground into pebbles, massive flooding and mud slides resulted in the complete erosion of the topsoil down to the bedrock. The only remaining trace of Karraras is in historical records, and in the barren outcrop where the city once stood. It is considered bad luck for a sailor to make landfall within sight of the outcrop, and storms in the area - though no more frequent or violent than anywhere else along the shoreline - are still viewed with deep trepidation.
