The Great Sundering

When first it was discovered, the planet Nuome was a vast ocean with a single continent. The great ship that had come through an interdimensional Rift circled the planet for many days. Small groups of individuals went down to the surface and explored the place. Finally, nearly all of the travelers found homes on the great continent. Over time those who landed on the planet developed the ability to control magical powers, or found a way to utilize the power of the planet itself, or absorbed divine energy directly into themselves. They grew more powerful and eventually they became gods. Chief among all of these was Aileen. Aileen received power directly from The Entity, the Creator, who appeared to her as a great tree in the center of the continent. Few knew that communing with The Entity was possible, or that such a thing even existed. Over time, everyone developed a style and a belief system which categorized their power as good or evil. And the way they went about utilizing their power categorized them as regulated, or lawful opposed to sporadic, or chaotic. And great wars began between the different factions. Aileen was very upset about all this. She had been the terra-former and was watching the destruction of all her hard work. Some had gained enough power that they could just flatten the entire continent into a huge desert, spotted with volcanic regions, a hell on earth. For many long days Aileen prayed to The Entity and garnered a great deal of power from it. Her anger great, she raised her hands and begin to spin about, her red hair flying out from her, a Fire Spirit spinning in the breeze. The ground trembled and great cracks appeared throughout the continent. Then, in one great shuddering of the planet, the continent split asunder, pieces of land floating this way and that into the great ocean. Mountains formed, ranges of volcanoes rose, their hot, boiling lava spewing over the land and sea alike. Eventually these land masses slowed, forming a great circle. In their center was the Sundering Sea and on the opposite coast the great ocean remained mostly unchanged. The center, where Aileen resided, was enclosed in mist and is now just a legend. The Gods had had their Spirits removed from their physical bodies. They could only interact with the humanoids by creating avatars. There followed a time where little power of any kind was available for humanoids to use. These were the Dark Ages.
