Hyperspace Communication Cables

Hyperspace cables are a series of cables running through hyperspace that allow for faster than light communication. They enable data to cross the galaxy in a matter of days, rather than the tens of millenia it would take data to cross the galaxy otherwise. The network began construction shortly after the colonization of Horizon and has now connected almost every inhabited planet.

History:

The idea behind the Hyperspace Communication Cable was first suggested by Mingxia Liu in a whitepaper published in Hyperspace Monthly on July 1st, 2094. The paper posited that due to Hyperspace's observed effect of dialating space, it means that the distance travelled by digital information would also be shorter, enabling information to be exchanged at faster than light speeds. This principled was later proved using a test cable connecting between Earth and Jupiter.   The whitepaper and later successful experiment prompted the the preparing the first colonization mission to Horizon to include linking Horizon to Earth using a Hyperspace Communications Cable as part of phase 2 of the expedition.   Many cables were initially laid by individual governments to connect themselves and their colonial ventures. As time progress and colonization expanded, these disconnected systems of communication were linked together, with a new body being formed by the United Nations to manage the cables. These duties were eventually subsumed by the Hyperspace Exploration, Management, and Communications Agency of the Galactic Union.

Theory:

Hyperspace Communications Cables rely on the fact that Hyperspace has a compressed travel distances compared to realspace. This allows information to travel faster than the speed of light, with most information able to cross from one end of the galaxy to the other in a matter of days rather than the millenia it would otherwise take to traverse the same distance.

Construction:

Hyperspace communication cables are constructed using specialized ships. These ships are designed to be able to carry the millions of kilometers of cabling that is necessary to cover the distance between planets. These ships then travel along hyperlanes, suspending the cables in hyperspace as they travel. Due to the Principle of Non-Contact, these cables will not collide with any other object. At either end of these cables are hyperspace gates that allow the cables to enter realspace. The cables then use traditional planetary communication means to send the messages along the final stage of their journey
