Galactic Hyperspace Designation System

The Galactic Hyperspace Designation System (GHDS) is a numbering system for hyperlanes in the Milky Way, managed by the Galactic Union Hyperspace Exploration, Management, and Communications Agency (HEMCA). The agency categorizes hyperspace routes into Major, Minor, Local, and Spur routes.

History

The United Nations had desgined an early designation system for the categorization of hyperlanes. This system was adopted by the Galactic Union after its formation and adapted them to form the gurrent Galactic Hyperspace Designation System.

Major Routes

Major routes are the galactic routes with the highest annual use, generally being important trans galactic transportation routes. These routes are also governed by the Galactic Union where possible, with HEMCA establishing regulations about what is allowed to pass through the hyperlanes and where.

Minor Routes

Minor routes are secondary routes within the galaxy, usually connecting medium population planets or in areas of the galaxy with a lower population. Approximately 40% of most minor routes currently connect locations in the galactic north.

Local Routes

Local routes are largely smaller routes that run in parrallel to major or minor routes connecting less populated planets. Local routes are largely seperately form spur routes only because they connect 6 or more planets, more than the 5 planet maximum to be considered a spur route.

Spur Routes

Spur routes are hyperlanes that connectd 5 or fewer inhabited planets. These are small routes that connect low population planets, typically 750 million people or less.
