Attempted assassination of Alexander I of House Baksworth

On April 18th, 2689, at 2:43pm Nuggian king Alexander I was shot and wounded by Pavel de la Corona, a Puredei nationalist, while on a state visit to Wusdeliu. Alexander was struck on on twice in his chest and once in his right arm. One other bullet grazed his neck and another grazed his right arm. Alexander was then rushed to Jostania General Hospital where he was then treated. Alexander survived the assasination attempt, but would continue to have breathing problems for the rest of his life, as well as issues using his right arm.   De la Corona was a member of a group of Puredei nationalists who had been plotting to assassinate Alexander for the treatment of the Puredei people by the Nuggian government. The Puredei had been conquered some 40 years earlier as part of the The Imperialist Wars wars of the 26th century.

Background

The Conquest of the Federal Puredei Republic

The Federal Puredei Republic was a nation that borded Nuggia in the 25th and 26th century. It had peacefully gained its independence from Germany in 2416, notably before the Nuggians gained their own independence. It had maintained friendly ties with Nuggia, even having provided Nuggian ships safe harbor during the Nuggian Revolution.   But, after Anata I signed the Declaration of Empire, relations between the two countries quickly turned sour. Puredeia was one of the countries to be conquered as part of Anata I's plan for empire. After a four year long campaign, the Puredeia had been fully occupied.

Treatment of Puredeian people

The treatment of territorise occupied during the The Imperialist Wars has generally been considered cruel and inhuman by non-Nuggian commentators. Occupied territories were forced to undergo a process of "Integration" by which occupied territories were placed under military occupation with extreme restrictions on assembly, free speech, and the press, along with the population being stripped of voting rights. Additionally, many Puredei had their businesses and property stripped from them. Many community leaders had also been arrested, and organizations that could be connected to Puredei ethnicity and culture were surpressed. There was also a large movement of Nuggians moving into occupied territories.   By the time of the assassination, Puredeia had been integrated into Nuggia as a part of the Outer Anatania administrative department. But, there were still strigent restrictions about who could be elected to office in the region, often targeting the friends and family of people who had been arrested prior to full integration. Puredeians also content discrimination in school and in the workplace to this day, citing a disproportionate representation in universities and high ranking business leaders.

Plans of the assassins

The journey plan of Alexander I was to pass through Liberty Plaza in Jostania in the mid afternoon before attending a ball at Consten Palace that night. The assassins had brought a number of rifles and pistols with them to take shots at the king. Assassins armed with pistols would disperse into the crowd while de la Corona and Candice Liberea would be stationed in nearby buildings with rifles to shoot the king.

Alexander I's visit to Wusdeliu

Alexander visited Wusdeliu as part of a goodwill tour to territories occupied during the The Imperial Wars. He toured territories, meeting local celebrities, business leaders, and other important individuals. He also had numerous public appearances scheduled as a part of the tour. The last leg of the tour was to begin with visit to Wusdeliu, with the plan being to attent a ball of local dignitaries and a public address the next day. As a show of support and trust to the public, Alexander completed the last 2.5 miles of his journey to his hotel for the night by foot. Part of this plan was to pass through Liberty plaza.   Alexander landed at Caderall Spaceport on April 18th, 2689 at 12:03pm. His motorcade then took him to Pacific Square, where he disembarked to take the rest of the journey to his hotel by foot. He entered the south end of Liberty Plaza at 2:41pm.

Assassination

As Alexander reached the center of the plaza, two shots were fired by the assassin ring's leader, Leonard Campbell, signaled the start of the assassination attempt. The other assassins then drew their weapons and attempted to fire at the King. Approximately 60 shots were fired, with five bullets ultimately striking or grazing the King. All told, two bullets hit Alexander in the chest, one bullet struck his right arm, one bullet grazed his neck, and another grazed his right arm.   Alexander was then rushed to Jostania General Hospital, where he was then treated. He remained in critical condition for several days, but ultimately survived.

Aftermath

Puredeia

In what has been considered to be retribution for the attack, Puredeia had a number of their political rights revoked, as well as their representation in the Nuggian Congress suspended. Puredeia has also been connected with political violence in mainstream Nuggian society since the assassination attempt.

Royal Security

Royal security was increased considerably after the assassination attempt. Nuggian kings must now always travel between destinations by motorcade. They must also be protected by a security detail at all time.

Legacy

The attempted assassination of Alexander I is commonly considered to be the end of the Nova Pax of Nuggian history. This marks the end of the period of relative peace within Nuggia at the end of the Imperialist Wars to the current era with a marked increase in political violence.
