The Veil

Yeric took a deep breath, then another, filling his lungs with air. He was always aware of the Veil’s presence, always sensing its motions, as a whale might feel the sea’s currents. But as he made the connection, his sense bloomed. He felt pure energy rippling across the world, flowing between the Pillars of Heaven. Yeric became a conduit for that energy, a vessel, drinking deeply of its sweet power in preparation of its use.

Long ago, the Archenlord cast The Fallen out of Matar. To seal them away he founded The Pillars of Heaven at the edges of Nov Matar. These pillars were loci of great power that they produced a network of energy that The Kindred Peoples discovered, and learned to manipulate.
The Veil is the protective shield around the known world, and it is the source of power for all true magi. It is produced by the relationship between the Pillars of Heaven. The power of the Veil loops back and forth from each of the Pillars to each of the Pillars. Magi can chart these lines, called Ley Lines. The Veil is strongest close to these lines, allowing magi to do amazing things. Vehicles like ships are able to move much faster along the Ley Lines. Teleportation is easiest when the origin and destination are along the same line. All the major Ley Lines converge in the center of Nov Matar, at one of the most magical places in the world. Here the great city of Arthein has arisen. In no place other than the Pillars themselves is the Veil more powerful.
