Beth Girinak

Beth Girinak, or House of the Golden Axe, is the seat of House Girinak and the third largest city in Athalar. Ever since Korandor Girinak, one of Omrin's most trusted generals, settled the place, Beth Girinak has been a shining light in the west, a powerful stronghold, and a place of hope.

Demographics

Beth Girinak predominantly consists almost entirely of Commonwealth folk. The only other ethnicity to speak of is a conclave of Corsair-blood folk, most of whom are the offspring of corsairs who failed to defeat the Lords of Girinak and, having no place to go, settled in the town. Beth Girinak has a large population of sailors and merchants and a large number of its male population are trained militia.

Government

Beth Girinak is run like many other noble-owned towns in Athalar. Though the Lord of House Girinak has ultimate authority, his domain is large and he appoints a Lord Mayor to oversee the legal operations of the town as well as a Lord Marshall to oversee the town's defense, run the town guard and ensure the training of the city militia. These two, plus the Bishop of Girinak, form something of a triumvirate of leadership, whose members often work to trump the others and achieve a higher level of influence over the working of the town.

Defences

Beth Girinak has stout walls on all sides, as well as several powerful pieces of artillery. In addition, it has its own private river, fed from the snows of Horus Kol, and feeding into large cisterns.

Industry & Trade

Beth Girinak has a large iron industry thanks to the rich iron mines inside Horus Kol. Beth Girinak is a leading ship-building town with its large shipyards south of the city. Furthermore it is a prosperous trading city, receiving tolls and goods from trade coming from the inland towns up river and from the isles to the west.

Infrastructure

Beth Girinak has a good collection of well-maintained roads, a large shipping harbor and an effect system of ferries that can take goods and people across the river.

Assets

Beth Girinak has large stores of arms, food, building materials and tools and works of engineering.

Guilds and Factions

The largest guilds in Beth Girinak are the Ironmonger's Guild, the Shipwright's Guild and the Mason's Guild. There is also a ring of thieves in Beth Girinak called the Bloodnails who have given the local constabulary a lot of difficulty as of late.

History

Beth Girinak first began as a small castle near the mouth of the River Mys in the first year of King Omrin I. While Korandor Girinak was a close associate of Omrin's, once the Urukanii where ultimately routed from the Isles at the Battle of Blackened Peaks, they left in their wake thousands of lesser Viliskarii in the yet-unconquered northern and western parts of Athalar Major. Omrin gifted a large portion of this land to Korandor, making him a duke. Korandor took his leave of Omrin's burgeoning court to further press Omrin's authority onto the wild lands of the western Athalar Major. Beth Girinak grew into a prosperous fortress town it is today.
