Netheril Tidbits
I've been rattling the idea around in my brain for a while, but bear in mind this is my theory and mine alone - not to be considered canon unless it ever becomes published matter with an FR logo and all. Also, as the usual coda claimed by FR writers, we're just reporting what Elminster tells us, so if we get something wrong, we get to blame him. :)
A few Netherese mages, in attempts to combat the phaerimm, attempted to transform themselves into sharn so they might better fight them. They failed, as the magics behind the sharn are far more powerful than any human magics ever tapped (other than those 11th and 12th level spells I wish didn't exist), but they did not die. Their magics left them trapped in nonhuman but powerful forms - They became the original progenitors of the deepspawn. At least that's my story and I'll stick to it....
Other Netherese mages saw the impending doom of Karsus and company and ditched Netheril early, heading south to Halruaa or east to other areas. Through very convoluted circumstances I'm not going to discuss, some end up adopting Imaskari dress and architecture and they build an enclave for themselves on a tiny island on the river that would one day bear the name of Stojanow, their home the Sorcerer's Isle.......
Ok, enough obscure lore. Back to work for me.....

Who's never sure when he should let loose some of the Realms ideas left lying about in shadowy corners of his brain......
