Tobias Holly (a.k.a. Toby)
Tobias Partholly was a young man with great ideals. He wanted to use his talent with Wist to make the world a better place, and to give his parents a better life.
Both of his parents were very poor with Wist. The official name for them was Scrub, and they were marked as such by his grandparents on their surnames, Scrubholly and Scrubsaxter.
He was very talented, and his potential greatly outshone his prospects. His parents could barely afford to have him tutored in Wistworking, sending him off to a boarding school for his teenage years.
It was not a glorious time in his life, and he often dreamed of adventure and glory, but he knew that he would not get to do those things any time soon. For a man like him, it was his place to study the fundamentals and become a single piece of the whole.
He turned 19 in the summer, and as he was preparing to go back home for the fall, he received a letter. The Arch-Magistrate of Trainay University had granted him a full sponsorship for a University education, including covering the expenses of labourers to help his family. All he would have to do in return was follow a clear course plan and enlist for a few years after completing his course.
He studied harder than he ever had before, knowing this was his ticket to greatness. He was a star student, and was only matched by a lovely young woman by the name of Marianne Halvtover. He spent the moments when he wasn't studying courting her, to little success, and simply enjoyed the time he got to spend around her.
The two were friends by proximity, who by 'circumstance' had found themselves in all of the same classes, and dorming in the same floor of their wing.
When he graduated, his assignment from the Arch-Magistrate was to follow Marianne's career path. He was apparently her Grandfather, and was playing a bit of a matchmaker. Tobias was honoured, and was happy to play ball.
When the two enlisted as venture mages, there was no guarantee that they would end up in the same squad. Unless a certain very influential individual pulled some strings to help things along. Marianne thought it all a nice moment of serendipity, that the one classmate who followed her career path would end up serving alongside her.
Tobias took great advantage of his situation, and pressed their relationship closer over time. Whenever he got stuck, or a bad moment broke out between them, he could send a letter to the Arch-Magistrate would give him some clear advice on making her see his way, and a few tips on what gifts she might like the most.
It took a year before they were an official thing, but only four months after that she was pregnant. A hasty proposal later, they were fiances.
This was not the path to their happy ending together. Indeed for Marianne, she was never truly happy with Tobias. He was a long known presence that seemed to stick to her like a barnacle, and was truly unshakeable. Now that she finally went along with him, trying to simply enjoy her life, she ended up derailing it.
She wrote a letter to her father, who she had long been out of contact with since the death of her mother, explaining what had gone down. His response shocked her to the core. Learning that Tobias had been a pawn of her Grandfather this whole time, and that every romantic gesture he made was orchestrated by the old bastard, was heartbreaking.
Tobias tried to explain that he did love her, that he was trying to make the best out of a shady situation, but she had already seen the truth, and there was no hiding it again.
She fled her squad and lived on the road for the remainder of her pregnancy, giving the child to her father, before cutting ties with everyone she ever knew or cared about.
But this is not the story of Marianne.
Tobias would never forget his only love, who left in the night. He would never truly see himself as the one in the wrong, and instead lived as a traveling adventurer, who sang songs of lost love.

His rapid acceleration and talent, especially for the child of two scrubs, has always been a place of pride for him. He was proving his worth ever since his wist was pulled.

He had difficulties when he started at his boarding school. He was scared and lonely, and his parents didn't have the ability to prepare him for the material he would be learning, and so he was always on the back foot, struggling to keep up with a class full of students who were raised knowing these things.

He fears that anyone he gives his love to will leave him. He often daydreams about his [child], and if they are doing alright.
Intellectual Characteristics
Emotionally stunted since his poor time at boarding school, he has little skill handling other people's emotions. He is a tactical genius who can construct great plans in the field, but he struggles to consider other people's actions and minds, which limits his usefulness to non-personal conflicts.

He puts himself and his family first in situations, and has lost much of his family over time. His hope is to one day get his family back together, and spend time with the people he loves.
