Otto is a very well read 16 year old. His parents are a well off couple of merchants, and did their best to raise a smart and studious child. His life was set out ahead of him, with every major life goal meticulously prepared, and all of it was tossed out the window as he lost much of his vision at age 11.

Personal history
By the age of six Otto was reading a new book every week. His parents had him study with a tutor who would quiz him on what he read, and have him write essays every day.
This was expensive, but they wanted the best for their only child. He would work hard and study tirelessly into the night, with a clear understanding of his future.
He would have his wisthread pulled at 11, start at wistworking school with his reading studies in the evening. At 19 he would go to the best university in Giulia. He would learn the three major forms of mages, and graduate with full honours at 27.
It was all going so well until a few weeks after his wist pulling. He squinted as he read his books, the words melting into the page otherwise. His handwriting got worse, and his tutor brought this up with his parents.
His vision was rapidly fading, a side effect of the wist pulling. About one in ten thousand had some lasting defect after the process, and he was unlucky enough to be losing much of his vision.
He spent the next two years searching for a solution, but none worked great. He got a pair of spectacles that boosted his ability to read for a while, but it did not last.
He dropped out of wist working school, unable to read or write without assistance. Let alone his inability to see his own wisthreading.
The life his parents had set up for him was gone. He spent much of his time in the public forums, listening to speeches and performances, and having some of his own.
He was no longer the child his parents loved and supported. Just after he turned 16, he heard talk of a woman who was great with wist, who was teaching a girl who did not have her own thread.
He begged his parents to contact her and post for just a few years of tutoring. They accepted, and he left home on a creaking boat to learn to be a mage.

He has never spared the time for romance. He is too invested in what his parents think about him to try and be a good partner for anyone.

Has read over 500 books.
Performed in street theater as a locally acclaimed orator and script writer.
Failures & Embarrassments
If there is a greatest embarrassment to him, it is the months of life he had given up after he stopped reading. He struggles to accept that this was just an important part of growing towards the light.
Mental Trauma
He is driven, and that drive is pressed on by an underlying anxiety for failure. He is afraid of not living up to his parents expectations, something he has always had this fear, even before his vision faded.
Does he want what he is going for? His choices are still built on the basis that he will be the exact child his parents wanted. Maybe he will learn that his path can be both what nobody would force onto him, but also where they said he could not go.

He is very cynical and atheistic, in his early teenage years he had some of the most nihilistic and cynical performances and essays ever written.
Speech
Sounds like he swallowed the IPA at age 7 and if he ever slips in his diction his tongue will go the way of his eyes.

Will get his inheritance and family business if he can receive the degrees and honours his parents expect after their considerable investments educating him.
