Discipleship of the Crow
In the beginning, we lived in a lawless state, holding nothing sacred. We cared for nothing, worked toward nothing. We grew complacent. Then came the Night of the Crow. -Scrolls of the Order of the Wing
The Discipleship of the Crow originated in the remote village of Mudreach, in the Kingdom of Dehann. Over the course of one night, later named the The Night of the Crow, a giant crow appeared over the village. Fires consumed most of the town, destroying approximately a third of the population.
Disciples believe that as humanity becomes complacent the Crow becomes enraged, enacting their vengeance upon the inhabitants of the world. The Night of the Crow was seen as a warning of things to come if actions were not taken. To prevent this action, they wander from village to village across the continent of Itenia, espousing their views and encouraging new followers to join them. Those that join are rarely seen or heard from again.
New disciples are taken to one of three temples on Itenia, the main one being in Mudreach. They are required to relinquish all ties to worldly items, selling everything and donating the cash from the sales to the temple. Once the donation is made, the initiates are presented with grey robes, their only clothing until such time as they advance or leave the temple.*
Little is known about the rituals of worship, as only disciples or new initiates are admitted into the temples. Rumors abound, however, ranging from monk-like silence and gardening to outright debauchery. What is known is that every month on the night of the new moon, five human sacrifices are made to appease the Crow. The sacrifices are chosen at random from the pool of initiates, and are expected to acquiesce without hesitation. Those initiates who make it past one year of sacrifices are elevated to the lowest of the three Orders, that of the Claw. Most disciples belong to this Order, though their responsibilites-as well as what it takes to advance to the next Order-are unknown. The middle tier of Orders is the Tail, and the highest Order, with only three known disciples, is that of the Wing.
*there are no known individuals that have left the Discipleship of the Crow. While this could be due to everyone initiated being perfectly happy, that seems unlikely. It seems more probably that anyone expressing a desire to leave finds themselves among the sacrifices.
Wow. Creepy. I'll think I'll keep away from them.
