Wallacian Campaign Session #34
General Summary
- Cressidien began using his Mold Earth spell to dig a 10 foot deep dry moat around the Miner's Exchange building to improve its defensive posture. He was approached by Halia Thorton, who asked him to only dig down 5 feet on the south side of the building, apparently to avoid breaching a tunnel exiting the building's basement.
- Almalexia, Brenna Callahan, Rizwyn, Sauroff, and Silvermoon were leading a force of 65 satyr warriors toward Phandalin when a disheveled Mirri stumbled out the underbrush. Mirri told the party that about half the town residents were taking shelter in the ruined manor on top of the hill overlooking the town, while the rest were holed up in the MIner's Exchange with Halia and Cressidien.
- When the party reached the town, they found orcs were already trying to batter down the door of the Miner's Exchange, while another force of orcs were still fighting their way up the steep slope of the hill towards the manor. The party decided to concentrate their forces on the orcs in the town first, defeating the separate orc formations in detail.
- With the phalanx of satyr warriors engaging the bulk of the orc infantry, the party was able to quickly push through to attack the orcs assaulting the Miner's Exchange.
- Sauroff started off with an area-effect spell, but a previously-invisible goblin shaman on a nearby roof tried to counterspell it. However, Sauroff was able to simultaneously cast his own counterspell, enabling his first spell to land!
- The now visible goblin was almost instantly shot with several arrows, one of which struck a clay jar hanging from her neck on a leather cord. The jar exploded in a large ball of flames, and a few of the party members were doused with flaming liquid.
- Meanwhile, the orcs trying to batter down the door of the Miner's Exchange finally started to break through. When Cressidien tried to attack them from a second floor window, one of the orcs drank a potion which caused him to double in size. The newly-enlarged orc attempted to grab Cressidien through the window, but Cressiden easily dodged the attack.
- While the rest of the party attacked the orc assault force from range, the orcs began to gulp down their own potions from clay bottles on their belts. Several other orcs grew in size, the skin of others hared into plates of turtle-shell armor, while still other orcs appeared to grow faster, with an almost rabid look on their faces.
- While the outside party continued to attack from range, the potion-boosted orcs tried to close to melee. Other invisible goblin shamans periodically counter-spelled the party, and/or detonated their own jars in fiery suicide attacks that burned multiple party members in each blast.
- Back in the Miner's Exchange, Cressidien made down stairs just as two orcs manged to clamber through the shattered door. Cressidien cast darkness on the area, blinding the orc invaders, while still allowing him to see clearly. The orcs attempted to fight, but usually couldn't avoid walking into walls.
- Outside, the female orc shaman leader of the attack, Ursala Urgala, dropped her own invisibility on the roof of the Miner's Exchange to cast her own counterspell of one of Sauroff's spells.
- The outside party began to attack Ursala with spells and arrows. She dropped down into Cressidien's darkness field, which spilled out the front of the Exchange, seeking to use the darkness to conceal her as she cast spells on the party. However, Almalexia also has the ability to see through magical darkness, so Ursala's plan was foiled.
- Ursala then drank a potion from her belt and vanished, even from Almalexia's enhanced sight.
- Some of the outside orcs were able to close to melee range with a few party members, but their numbers were quickly depleting.
- As a final act of desperation, Ursala moved invisibly into the midst of the party and detonated her own jar of fiery liquid. The result fireball knocked Almalexia into unconsciousness, when Ursala appeared to be immune to the flames. Although the explosion had severely injured many of the party, most of them were still able to fight, and they were able to slay the orc shaman before she could escape.
- The orcs attacking the town were zealots, and seeing their religious leader fall disheartened them. The morale of the surviving orcs broke, and they fled back into the wilderness.
- As the townsfolk began to repair the damage of the attack, Halia sought out Almalexia. Halia suggested that now would be the prefect time to apply to the Wallacian crown to incorporate the province as a new principality, with Almalexia as the princess. The victory would prove that the province had been "tamed". Further, rumor had it that the Countess Cassandra Thorrindal was out of the country. Although she has no direct vote on the issue, her opinion is respected by many of the existing princes and princesses, and Halia knows that she does not like fey.
- Almalexia agreed to this proposal, and directed Halia to prepare the paperwork. Halia then said that since Almalexia does not currently have any children, the crown will want her to designate an interim heir, to ensure stability of the new principality, and suggested herself as the candidate. Almalexia agreed, and Halia hurried off to draft the paperwork.
