Vitals

Vitals are people who heal people with their powers as a job. They can be qualified health professionals, advisors and those working in shelters or care. Although it used to be a job for those with Vitakinesis, many people who use their powers to help people physically and psychologically are also considered to be Vitals.

Career

Qualifications

We expect trainees to know some basic biology before getting a career as a Vital in any sector.
— DSI requirements
To train to be a Vital, one must know some animal or human biology, especially their physiology. If a person wants to specialise in an area, then they must learn that area in greater detail before starting their training.   People may also learn chemistry if they want to use their healing powers in jobs relating to medicine, dentristry and vetinary science.

Payment & Reimbursement

Vitals are paid based on their experience and expertise. They typically earn around £28k as a starting salary, but this depends on where they work. Vitals working in the health sector earn slightly more than that, while those working in shelters, prisons and non-profit firms earn a lot less than that. Vitals who are self-employed or work in mobile vans earn wages, but are quicker to access in emergencies.

Perception

Purpose

Vitals were always a part of humanoid culture, as they were the health professionals on Quadrilore. They are also hired when there is a shortage of qualified professionals in places where majority of the population are humans. They are quicker to train and they have powers, so are often in high demand.

Social Status

I get calls every two weeks from people across Dustbane. Many Vitals get them more frequently.
— Tessa, a Vital Psychologist
Vitals are often used to fill up places where there are labour shortages. Vitals who combine this profession with being a doctor or a psychiatrist are the most sought-after people, as doctors and psychiatrists take a long time to train. If the Vitals work well and help many people, then they are allowed to work full-time, and are often seen as more valuable than traditional healthcare professionals.

Demographics

Vitals are either humanoids or half-humans with powers.

Operations

Tools

Most Vitals don't need tools, as their powers are often enough. However, there are times where the Vital is not experienced enough to help their patient, or they don't have the right powers to deal with the problem. In these cases, specialist equipment found in hospitals are used.

Workplace

Vitals can work anywhere, so long as their tools are in the place. Some self-employed people build their own clinics, while others work in homeless shelters, hospitals, or even in mobile vans. The Vital just needs to be comfortable so they can work at their best.   Some people don't even work in the public sector – they work in private firms, helping businesses cut costs while retaining most of their workforce.
