Historical Basis

The Myth came from the story of a seargant that refused to retreat and took command of the Legion, The Legion was part of a larger army that suffered from terminal leadership. facing a force of hobgoblins that was notably smaller the commanders and generals had manuevered into favorable positions but signaled retreat when the 'Iron shadow' Assasins assasinated the general. The Legion soon to be known as the three step legion formed a line at a natural choke point inbetween two hills and covered the retreat of the army reportadly falling back only three steps under the pressure of the entire goblinoid army. the seargant and his squad kept morale by singing battle songs and laying about them with a fervor that drove back all exept the highly diciplined hobgoblins. the legion fought too a man and when the seargant had only a hundred men left holding the line the Warlord offered them a place in his army. in resonce theyadvanced the three steps the hall retreated and set their shields.

The Myth is widly known among the goblin races and the hobgoblins in particular teach the story to inspire their troops. the civilised races dont remember the leigon at all and only remember that the army had been routed.

Hobgoblins tell the story as literally as they remember but due to misinformation they call the seargant a king and the leigon were his honor guard. goblins and bugbears talked about how the leigon were demons and all had sold their souls to fend off the goblinoid host
