Kearlic Colony- Nacht Tor

Or the Medieval Lovechild of Las Vegas and Monte Carlo

Written by HistoryNeopagan4

Nacht Tor. A cesspool of crime and villainy. Once, it was one of the greatest cities of the Kearlic Empire; now, it is a hive of scum where the morality and dignity of the city has decreased in þe face of multiple wars, famines, and revolts þat have plauged þe city. Currently it is ruled by the debauched and cruel Baron Andreas den Schwarzeritter, who is rumored to go through more lovers in a year than Dwarf Lords do in ten.

Government

Baron Andreas keeps a simple beauracracy: the Chief Tax collectors, the Head Constables, Chief Arcanologists, and every Marshall all report to him.

Defences

The shipyards are protected by spells; The Black Pit, (a play on the name of the city, 'Nacht Tor,' or 'Night's Gate.') is a truly monstrous fortress of bedrock, iron, and quickstone (cement.) Schwarzegrube (Black Pit in Kearlic) is built on a hill within the city, its defenses consisting of a series of tall towers, layers of walls, and a squat Citadel at the center, with the Citadel at the top.

Industry & Trade

It is a trading port, where most of the city's wealth is generated by taxing foreign merchants.

Assets

It boasts many markets, where people of all races can mingle and do trade together.

Guilds and Factions

*Various street gangs, mafia, and 'Secret Societies' that are lucky that Baron Andreas doesn't care about them that much (and they know it!)

History

An ancient Kearlic settlement, dating back to 389 OP, Nachttor began as a Kearlic outpost on the Southern End of the Horns of Gallipoli, on the northern coast of Lisref. Due to its strategic position, it quickly became a prosperous port, charging over 20% in tolls, making it one of the wealthiest cities outside of Karlaheim (Kearl Land.) It became a target of Elven attacks during the Elven Invasions from 330 NP to 782 NP; fortunately for the Kearls the Elves could not penetrate Nachttor's defenses. However, the effect of Dwarven Stríðsherrar (Literally 'Battle Raiders') During what was known as the Dwarven Raiding Age from 794 NP to 1225 NP caused the old outpost to be renovated into what would become The Black Pit, (a play on the name of the city, 'Nachttor,' or 'Night's Gate.') The city that grew around it spread out along the coast, fearing that attempting to go inland would spur Tauric raids-that and Nachttor's wealth came from the sea. During the Great War, Nachttor was used as a base from which to halt Royalist shipping to their troops, territories, and colonies in Western Lisref and Actura. Any attempt to take the city ended in utter failure. At the end of the war, Nachttor seceded from the Kearlic Empire, causing a great blow to the Imperial economy. Since then, the morality and dignity of the city has decreased, while its reputation for vice, murder, Necromancy, and other depraved activities has only increased.

Architecture

The people of Nachttor adorn their stone dwellings with various rugs, tapestries, and blankets that indicate association with a particular group.

Geography

Located at the Northern Coast of Lisref, along the Horns of Gallipoli, the fortress is built atop the Southern Horn, while the city sprawls along the base and the coast. A Human warrior in the Garrison once remarked to the local press that, "Oh, I heard the view from the Citadel is a sight to behold. If only I wasn't so busy making sure I didn't fall off!" (on account that Kearls-who are a short race-built Nachttor.)

Natural Resources

the Nacht Volk use Salt as their primary tradable good.
So far, this city, despite officially breaking with Karlheim, manages to stay up-to-date regarding military technology...
