Sanatorium1

In the most northerly area of Nithira, within the countryside of Autta lies the largest Sanitorium, known simply as Sanitorium1. This building stands tall and proud, gazing over even the tallest trees. As the first Sanitorium to be opened, the structure has seen its share of environmental damage. Cracks and gaps decorated over the surface like honoured war wounds to be shown off as medallions. Irradiated ivy clings to the concrete surface like an unrelenting curse, slithering further up the solid structure.   Some of the less educated believe the building to be a living being, a motherly figure to be respected and adored, a deity, more or less. They name the building 'Matron' and look to her with eyes wide and hopeful, always having faith that the sick can be healed. She has indeed held many wounded and sick within her walls over the years, giving them a place of refuge and sanctuary to repair and mend nasty and unforgivable injuries.   Over the years, the need for inclusivity has enormously risen due to the vast difference within all the species who reside within Nithira. The Sanitorium now stands as a symbol of equality, living beings are all equally at risk to disease and death, and the need for medical intervention has never been more critical.   For decades, the Sanitorium has been a hub for healing, a beacon of hope for those who have survived into this unfamiliar and harsh way of life. With medical supplies of the old world slowly becoming obsolete (most of the technology and scavenged supplies being targeted towards humans), new ways of healing had to be created. Sanitorium1 opened its doors with hope for all the remaining and new kinds of life.

Purpose / Function

The northern and eastern wings are used mainly for minor grievances such as broken limbs, treatable radiation, and small bouts of assorted illness.  Long corridors reach out like warm arms embracing you, swaddling you as they curve around the parameters of the architecture. Windows are dotted every other meter, heavily tinted so as not to allow powerful UV rays of the dying sun to cause further harm.   The southern and western sections, being the largest, are used to house the ‘long-term’ patients. Patients who have an improbability of survival, but still enough chance to be emitted.  This section is not so embracing. The corridors here seem to stretch like rigid limbs being yanked and twisted, with flickering harsh lights and no windows. The patient chambers are stiff boxes with dense mechanized doors that have automatic locks, the motherly spirit of the building suddenly morphing to feel overbearing and repressive. These locks are designed to quarantine patients who are dangerously infectious, and to protect the staff.
