Tysos Enters the Union Sphere of Influence

Political event

936 3A

"We are here to protect you, please do not resist." -Union Admiral

The late 920's, and early 930's the Eastern Sea saw a large uptick in uncontrolled piracy. This hurt many traders and travelers during the time, though the Union began to build up its fleet to control the sea better.   This culminated in 935 3A when a large group of pirate vessels attempted to blatantly invade and conquer Tysos from its Olark population due to perceiving the island as weak and backwards.   While the pirates were unsuccessful, Tysos found itself in a bind. It was damaged in the attack, and continued assaults would eventually wear down the peaceful island.   In response, the Federated Union of Eastern Kalin made Tysos an offer. They would use naval resources to protect Tysos, in exchange the Union would be allowed to establish a naval base on the small island nation.   Tysos, pressed, accepted in a narrow public citizen vote. This seemingly paid off immediately, as the initial Union Naval Force sent to begin surveying the island for the naval base drove off a force of 10 pirate ships almost effortlessly.   Since then, the island has effectively been under Union control militarily. Tysos Naval Base is one of the most important naval bases for the Union in the Eastern Sea, being an important back up location of the navy, as well as its primary anti-pirate base. Tysos rules itself, but the military base is technically "union territory" and its many off duty naval personnel and marines are known to cause trouble on the island.   Grumbling exists to this day with the presence of the Union navy, but such grumbling never usually goes beyond just that, grumbling.
