Halfling Species in Nilam | World Anvil

Halfling

Actually called Daoine an Domhain (People of the World), Halflings have gained their rather disparaging name from a mixture of misunderstandings and outright bigotry. In Efaanu, the term Halfling comes from the Atkorian Empire, who found the average Daoine an Domhain to be "half" an Olark in height. In Kalin it is because they were half a normal Human's height. They usually call themselves "Daoine."   Daoine are an affable and cheerful people. They cherish the bonds of family and friendship as well as the comforts of hearth and home along with philosophy and scholarship, harboring few dreams of gold or glory. Even adventurers among them usually venture into the world for reasons of community, friendship, wanderlust, or curiosity. They love discovering new things, even simple things, such as an exotic food or an unfamiliar style of clothing.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

In Kalin

Halflings are actually something of a rarity on Kalin. They only exist in small enclaves throughout the land. Originating from a land the Halflings simply refer to as "Áit Chónaithe" which literally translates to "dwelling," making it unclear whether that's the actual name of their homeland or they're just having a joke at everyone's expense. What scholars and wanderers actually make it to Abhailmid, the home of Halflings, will find that its the latter.

In Efaanu

Daoine an Domhain originate from their small region of Efaanu known as Abhailmid , but can be found throughout Efaanu. It's unknown if the Halflings actually originate from Abhailmid, but as of the fall of the Old Imperium it's where Halflings have dwelt for countless generations. Abhailmid is a relatively quiet area of Efaanu, while not stranger to strife and war it has been saved from the worst conquests and wars of the ages due to its close ties to not one but two important historical Empire founders. In both cases Abhailmid was peacefully integrated into the empire they indirectly helped found.   The Halflings of Abhailmid are known scholars and philosophers, and have left a profound impact on Efaanu by spreading their philosophy via the teachings they've imparted on two empire building historical figures. The Realm's language and religion is directly lifted from the Halflings, and the continent of Efaanu even owes its very widely accepted name to the Halflings of Abhailmid.

In Wahar

Daoine that make their way to Wahar mostly do so out of wanderlust and a desire to discover, they do not originate from the continent.

There is supposedly a large population of Halflings in Western Archin, but how they got there is unclear, as is the state of their existence.
