An-éadóchas

Once one of the two Dwarven cities in Efaanu, An-éadóchas is now little more than a curiosity for historians and a final destination for explorers.   During the time of the Atkorian Empire An-éadóchas, then known as Garak-Uln, was a place of trade and mining. The Plusios mountains that Garak-Uln laid in were mineral and gold rich, allowing for the city to grow prosperous. After the Atkorian Empire fell and its influence waned Garak-Uln became an independent state, but maintained good relations with its neighbors.   However, one day the city simply stopped trading. It's stone gates slammed shut, its canals ran dry and its lights went out. What few Dwarves from Garak-Uln were found simply said the city had gone into a self-exile to deal with "internal matters." Many suspected a civil war or disease. But as the years, decades, and eventually centuries went by no one heard anything from the once prosperous city and it was eventually considered abandoned.   It wasn't until a Daoine an Domhain explorer named Uvida Idoharn and her team managed to find a little known secret entrance into the city that any information was gleaned. Idoharn entered the city with about 60 other adventurers, and only she and one other returned, half-dead and delirious. They were found by patrols from the then Mernite Sovereignty. Idoharn simply referred to the city as "An-éadóchas," or "deepest despair." She maintained that name and only said that the city was unsafe for any to enter before dying two weeks after she was found. The healers reported that she had an incurable disease afflicting her, giving credence to the idea that the city was beset by a plague when it shut its doors.   Since Idoharn's return the hills and approach to An-éadóchas has been guarded by Mernite patrols and rangers to stop anyone foolish from trying to find a way in. Though some do still find ways in, and never return. Even The Realm maintained this tradition during its conquest of Mernite, as has The Holy Mernite Sovereignty.
