Udkhul

The primary trading port and defender of The Holy Mernite Sovereignty's inland regions at the mouth of the Tigban River, Udkhul serves as the literal and metaphorical shield of the people dwelling in the Tigban River region.   The city benefits from its location, being one of the few ports with "regular" trade and contact with Kalin, as well as occasional trade with distant Archin. It would benefit more if it could freely trade with southern Efaanu, but most ports to its south are controlled by The Realm, which the Sovereignty is usually at war with.   Due to its role as the defender of the Sovereignty, it also holds the majority of the nations Navy, which often sallies forth to blunt naval attacks and invasions from The Realm.

Government

The city of Udkhul is traditionally held by the heir-apparent of the ruling Monarch of The Holy Mernite Sovereignty, as a way to prepare them for ruling the whole nation. In the event the heir is under-aged, or there isn't one, it is ruled by the oldest sibling of the Monarch. If neither is true, the Monarch selects a ruler for the city.

Defences

The city lacks in walls usually found in most cities. Instead the city relies on the mountainous region around it to funnel invading armies into easy chokepoints. Meanwhile, it is the home of the Sovereignty's navy and defends the nation and city from attack at sea.

Industry & Trade

The city was known for its whaling industry, which provided and still provides oil for the city and beyond. Additionally, the city is an important trading hub for Northern Efaanu.

History

The city, much like Mernar to the west, predates even the Atkorian Empire. It was conquered by the Atkorian's, and then later by the Carlegnian's. It was part of the Sovereignty for the entirety of its existence until its conquest by The Realm, and then later re-conquest into The Holy Mernite Sovereignty.

Geography

Udkhul lies both on the Tigban River and in the Dwan Mountains. This makes farming difficulty, but the city thrives on its mining and fishing; as well as its whale oil industry.
