What is a Memory Unit?
Memory units or "mu", are a generic data storage unit used to measure data usage by Files: data, photos, programs, apps, and just about any other digital data.
Creating a File
When a File is created by saving data to a storage device, it is assigned a number of mu depending on its filetype, and how much data is contained. Due to the file structuring of the hardware, a Memory Unit is always a full integer, so use the smallest number of
full mu it would take to store that file.
| 1 mu of this |
Can hold this much data |
| Text or Photos |
20 pages or Photos |
| Audio |
Catalogue of up to 20 songs, or up to 10 min of recorded audio |
| Video |
5 min |
| Braindance Content |
2 minutes |
| Program or App |
1 Program or App |
So, for example, creating a text file of 27 pages, would require 2 mu in which to save it. 20 minutes of video recording would take 4 mu. Saving a 1 minute braindance would require 1 mu.
Defragging
With Microtech DeFrag, you can combine 2 or more files into a single file as long as the two files use the same filetype. The file's new size is recalculated as if it were a new file, and all combined files are saved at once.
For example, a if a Media wrote a 10 page report about Arasaka, and then saved the report as a 1 mu file, and then later in the day, took 10 incriminating photographs to back up their report, that they saved in a second memory unit, the Media could then use DeFrag to combine both of those files into a single Composite File containing both previous files. The file size is then calculated as if it were a freshly created file. In this case, it would be a 1 mu file (10 pages of text combined with 10 photos), saving the Media 1 mu.
Encryption/Decryption
By using The Microtech Vault app, a user can encrypt or decrypt Files. Encrypting a file will double the mu size of a file, and Decrypting one will halve it's size. The DV to decrypt a File is the Electronics & Security Tech Check made when the file was encrypted.
Steganography
By using the Microtech Chameleon app, a user can conceal a number of Files inside another file by making an Electronics & Security Tech Check, and combining the mu value of both individual files. They are just added as is, and cannot be combined as if through DeFrag. The files need not be the same filetype.
