Sundering

Once upon a time...

No one knows how or who joined the world of mortals with the Fae Lands long before the advent of the written word. This joining was a boon to the fae, who used the mortals and their high emotions to power their magic.

As the population of mortals grew, and their cultures developed, the Tenet that the fae even existed began to wane. The fae courts reacted in different ways.

The Wild Fae simply chose to stay in one world or the other. In the mortal realm, they worked as forces of nature and fate, and the clinging superstitions and fading nature religions powered their magic.

The Unseelie Court fae decided to put pressure on the mortal realm. They used the shadows and the unknown to enhance the mortals' fears of the monstrous aspects of the fae, gaining power through that fear.

The Seelie Court chose a more complex route. They created the Four Treasures of the Tuatha De Danann, which acted as anchors to connect the two worlds. In order to maintain the Treasures, they granted mortal leaders recognition and some power. However, mortals forget the importance of old things, and the source of the Treasures was forgotten within the politics of the mortal realm.

After centuries, the fae faded into the background, becoming more myth than fact, and only those who held to the Old Ways knew where the power really comes from.

One of these mortals, one who learned the Old Ways, tried to salvage the Treasures... and the connection to the magical fae. This mortal became known as Merlin.

The rise and fall of King Arthur was the last attempt by the Seelie fae and a few Half-Mortal allies to hold the connection between the worlds.

But mortals are more fickle than fae magic can fix. And the great loves that the Seelie manipulated to guide the mortals into maintaining the connection failed. The Treasures scattered with the fall of the Court of Camelot.

The Sundering kept the fae from easily moving between the worlds and accessing the emotional power of the mortal realm. Only those who were already in the mortal realm and a few individuals continued to cross the Veil.

Until...
