Book of Exalted Deeds

The definitive treatise on all that is good in the multiverse, the fabled Book of Exalted Deeds figures prominently in many religions of Good and even some Neutral aligned deities. Rather than being a scripture devoted to a particular faith, the book's various authors filled the pages with their own vision of true virtue, providing guidance for defeating evil in all its forms.   The Book of Exalted Deeds rarely lingers in one place. Once the book is read, it typically vanishes to some other corner of the multiverse where its guidance can bring light to the dark. Although attempts have been made to copy the work, efforts to do so fail to capture its magical nature or translate the benefits it offers to those pure of heart and firm of purpose.   A heavy clasp, wrought to look like angel wings, keeps the book's contents secure. Only a creature of Good that is attuned to the book can release the clasp that holds it shut. Other creatures that peruse the book's open pages can read the text but glean no deeper meaning and reap no benefits. An evil creature that tries to read from the book will quickly find itself bured (if not incinerated) by the blinding light of the book's raidant power.

Holy Lore in the Book

  1. The book contains the sacred oaths of the first paladins from each paladin order in the multiverse, listing those of Good alignment as examples to strive for while warning against falling to the dark temptations of those who made their oaths for personal gain or other dark desires.
  2. The book contains a list of artifacts designed for dark purposes, primarily those associated with Evil deities, as well as instructions on how to destroy these items. Several items on this list have already been crossed off, presumably destroyed by previous holders of this book.
  3. The book contains a cookbook style list of simplistically clever recipes that can be made from few or dwindling resources in times of famine. Additionally, this section details pastries that are said to be heavenly, suitable for both personal consumption or to leave as an offering at the altar of a deity.
  4. The book contains what is likely the largest repository of knowledge on healing salves in existence. It lists out materials, costs, where to find each ingredient, and how to combine these ingredients. There is virtually no ailment that cannot be cured by at least one of these restorative mixtures.
  5. The book contains an incantation that can be used to contact a celestial who specializes in helping unfortunate souls tricked into a contract with a devil find a way out of their unfair bargains.
  6. The book contains a detailed, extensive, and convincing philosophical dialogue that offers guidance to persuade individuals with evil intent to repent and change their ways.
  7. The book contains sheet music for a song called the "Triumphus Cordis" (Triumph of the Heart). The song is beautiful, so uplifting it will fill even the most desperate hearts with hope, and automatically corrects itself on the page to be readable by any musician for their preferred instrument.
  8. The book contains a peculiar chapter, as it begins with "LOWBORN OF THE WORLD UNITE!!!". It describes in detail how the meek can (and, it argues, should) inherit the lands they work, and they shall seize the means of production and throw off the yoke of oppression from corrupt nobility who abuse their power and station. Unfortunately, despite being written with the best of intentions, the language on how this is to occur is wildly vague and certainly open to all kinds of interpretation.
  9. The book contains sacred teachings and philosophies associated with goodness, justice, and righteousness, both religious and otherwise. This section provides guidance on how to lead a virtuous life, make moral decisions, and uphold noble ideals.
  10. The book contains spells and rituals that are aligned with the forces of good, many of which are thought to be lost to time. These spells could be used by righteous spellcasters to smite evil, heal the wounded, protect the innocent, and promote harmony.
  11. The book contains information about celestial beings, such as angels, archons, or other divine entities. This chapter provide insights into their nature, abilities, hierarchies, and ways to seek their aid or forge alliances with them.
  12. The book contains knowledge about the nature of evil, the methods employed by dark forces, and strategies for combating them. Additionally, it details the weaknesses and vulnerabilities of evil creatures (such as undead and fiends) and provides advice on how to counter their wickedness.
  13. The book contains inspiring stories and legends of heroic figures who embodied the principles of good, tales meant to serve as examples and motivations for aspiring champions of righteousness.
  14. The book contains a section on hypothetical scenarios and moral dilemmas to challenge the reader's moral compass. A pure-hearted individual who reads this chapter is meant to gain new insights into resolving conflicts, making tough decisions, and understanding the consequences of one's actions.
  15. The book contains a section that delves into the various planes of existence associated with goodness, such as heavenly realms or other divine dimensions. It offers descriptions, maps, and insights into the denizens, landscapes, and challenges found within these planes.
  16. The book contains an outline of codes of conduct, oaths, and vows that individuals can take to dedicate themselves to the cause of good. These codes provide guidelines for behavior, inspire followers, and some even grant special abilities or boons so long as they are adhered to.
  17. The book contains a log of legendary artifacts and relics associated with goodness and how they have been used to battle against evil. While details vary from item to item, this chapter may reveal their locations, histories, and any conditions required to unlock their powers.
  18. The book contains a collection of arcane runes of celestial origin designed to ward against evil, protecting structures and land from wicked creatures such as undead or hags by preventing them from entering. Many of these runes must be drawn using a material that weakens the wicked creature in question, such as iron or silver.
  19. The book contains a large number of pages which appear to be a diary. At some point in the book's seasoned history it seems a celestial got a hold of it. The celestial is not one of renown or great significance to the world, and how it got access to the book is a mystery. It's writing mostly details small acts of good it has observed from mortals and done itself, with commentary on how even the smallest deeds can make a difference.
  20. The book contains information on performing a ritual which is largely believed to be impossible, allowing you to return the soul of an intelligent undead (such as a vampire or lich) to its body and restore them to life.
  21. The book contains a list of spells, rituals, and the required ingredients to remove curses. The author states the list is intended to help those without access to curse-removing spells, and later sections detail methods for purifying cursed magic items to allow the use of these objects in the service of good.
  22. The book contains the account of an ancient druid that speaks of the best ways civilization and nature may intertwine and benefit each other in a symbiotic relationship, such as advanced farming techniques and methods of preparation against natural disasters.
  23. The book contains a repository of medical information, detailing the biology of every known type of humanoid in the multiverse. The author's intro states this information allows any individual to provide treatment for injuries and diseases, with examples both with and without the use of magic included.
  24. The book contains a page with an ever-changing motivational message, which is always whatever the current reader needs to hear most.
  25. The book contains a series of mental exercises that allow one to resist and overcome the effects of possession, enchantment spells, and similar wicked creatures & magic meant to make one a prisoner in their own body.
  26. The book contains the multiverse's most complete list of alcoholic beverages and detailed (if poorly written and at times incomprehensible) instructions on the art of merrymaking. Several of these entries seem to have been written on bar napkins adhered to the book's pages through various manners. This chapter includes recipes on how to make these brews yourself and which taverns across the planes stock each drink. It is signed by the initials "V.V.".
  27. The book contains many holy spells once wielded by heroes of old and thought lost to time, the vast majority of which so ancient that sections of their writing have worn away to the point they'd be impossible to replicate, though some do still remain. The Power Word Shield spell is a 7th level abjuration spell and one of many power words thought forgotten, though legend claims it is the ultimate defense. This spell is available to bards, clerics, sorcerers, and wizards. With a word, it protects a target from injury and renders tham all but invincible for a brief period, even going as far as to cure the target of poisons and other ailments that may be afflicting them.
  28. The book contains many holy spells once wielded by heroes of old and thought lost to time, the vast majority of which so ancient that sections of their writing have worn away to the point they'd be impossible to replicate, though some do still remain. One such spell was once wielded by a champion of Bahamut, Dragon Lord of Justice. The Platinum Lances spell is a 6th level abjuration spell available to clerics. It conjures lances of radiant energy and unleashes the wrath of the Dragon King upon those who would bring evil unto others.
  29. The book contains many holy spells once wielded by heroes of old and thought lost to time, the vast majority of which so ancient that sections of their writing have worn away to the point they'd be impossible to replicate, though some do still remain. The Normalise spell is a 9th-level abjuration spell created by a pragmatic pacifist who both did not wish to kill and knew that even death may not be enough to stop great evils from returning. This spell can be cast by bards, clerics, druids, sorcerers, and wizards. A creature subjugated to this spell is cut off from the Weave and loses its ability to wield magic, unless a wish spell or divine intervention restores the severed connection.
