Abyssal Shard

An abyssal shard is a piece of the Abyss itself, the dark realm of the Lower Planes that demons and some of the most wicked deities call home. Once brought into the Material Plane, an abyssal shard can serve as a vessel for demons that anchors them to the realm of mortals. Any demon connected to the shard will return to it when killed instead of being sent back to the Abyss, which is the usual result of killing an otherworldly creature outside of their home realm. This effectively allows the demons to function as an endless army so long as the shard remains intact.
The Venture Boys found an abyssal shard in an ancient ruin, which was stolen by Arachnor after he released several demons from it to keep the adventurers occupied. He installed it as a power source on the Jeweled Eye, and Captain Elgar bartered for the demons' services in exchange for (eventual) freedom.
This abyssal shard was later destroyed when N36 later boarded the Jeweled Eye and took control of the spelljammer.
