Back of the Bar

"Can you pass the butter?" Kranjax asked from across the large island counter in the Crystal Barrel Kitchen.   "Sure! Trade you for the sugar."   They each slid their items across to one another.   "Wait... isn't this your 4th package of sugar? What are you even making?"   "That's your 9th cup of butter. I could ask you the same."   "Softbatch chocolate chip cookies, and a few Elvirian Fey Recipes."   "But that's still A LOT of butter!"   "Fey recipes require, in addition to a normal amount of butter, a fistful of butter, each. This doubles when you double the recipe, and yes, it MUST be a fistful." Kranjax held up his hands, each containing a block of butter.   "Doesn't that feel kinda.... gross?"   "Absolutely! But... Fey Recipes are very much a 'trust the process' kind of thing."   "Fine, so, gonna need more butter?"   "Probably... wait, I have some already."   "Oh, alright. Do we have any more sugar? Oh, and flour?"   " I think you used the last of both." He glanced around and saw a package of sugar and a large sack of flour which he had no recollection of getting nor leaving anywhere. "Oh, I guess not, but I didn't leave those there. Maybe Nick or Reason did."   They continued working, baking their various sweets, and trading ingredients as needed, when they both crinkled their noses. Kranjax looked around in confusion, and suspicion. "Hey, Sprinkles?"   "...Sori."   "Sprinkles sounds cuter."   She rolled up a sleeve and raised her piping bag ominously, "I'll show you cute..."   "You already have. Anyway, lemme see that sack of flour."   Sori grabbed the sack of flour and vanished in a cloud of powdered sugar, only to appear next to Kranjax. She dropped it on the counter beside him.   He inspected it. "Hmm, we'll, I 'spose I'll need some eggs."   "We still have..." Sori was grabbed by Kranjax, who put a finger to his lips. He whispered, "You smell that?"   "Huh? Yeah. Smells great. Nice and savory."   "Exactly. What are you cooking?"   "1 dozen peach tarts. That smells like nothing I'm making."   Kranjax glanced around his immediate vicinity. Sori was standing to his right, and had not moved since teleporting with the flour. He glanced to his left to see a carton of eggs. He'd made no effort to summon any ingredients, and it seemed Sori was the same. "I'd like to remind you that I, too, and only making sweets."   Thru glanced at each other with an understanding that only those who are particularly mischievous have, and both their eyes landed on the 3rd of 4 ovens in the room. It was on, and not empty.   They communicated wordlessly, even though telepathy was well within their abilities. A poop of sugar and arced silver sparks later, the oven was flanked, and the person in front of it surrounded.   "Thanks for the eggs." Kranjax said, looking down at the person.   "Pleasure's mine..." The creature froze, looked on both directions, and then just looked momentarily stunned.   The 2 kitchen accomplices who'd just met inspected...her? A short stature, copper hair done in pigtails, freckles, green eyes tinged with silver, and pale skin.   Sori squealed, "She's adorable!" She reflexively reached towards her. There was a clang and Sori froze. The broad side of Kranjax's blade sat in front of her nose. On the other side of that blade was a rolling pin, yet it felt far more dangerous than any rolling pin should've.   A very unexpected Austrailain accent followed "Hey, Amazon, didn't anyone tell ya not to just touch people?"   Kranjax smirked, and not taking his eyes off of the girl responded to Sori, "Still think she's adorable?"   "Would it be bad if I said yes?"   "Oye, you sure you don't want me to..." The small one froze. The reason was a tremor of energy that radiated outward through the kitchen.   "That's a bit wasteful if you're trying to sweep the floor." The girl withdrew her rolling pin and stared up at Kranjax. "Torrin. I'm a gnome, and yes, this is my full size."   "I'm Kranjax, and this is Sprinkles."   "Sori!"   In perfect unison, Kranjax and Torin responded, "but Sprinkles sounds cuter."   Torin and Kranjax grinned at each other and Kranjax asked, "There's meat in that dish you're cooking, right?"   "Yeah."   Sori, who's ears perked up at the word meat, suggested, "You share the dinner and we'll share dessert?"   Kranjax had already produced enough plates for the 3 of them, plus Reason and Nick.

"Hmm, kitchen has gotten rather busy." Reason spoke to the room of strange creatures. Not visible, but Kranjax thought it may have come from the mouth of a fly on the wall.

May you find the truth as it billows through the branches...
